Chika and Ben had been friends since kindergarten. Their parents were already like inlaws, as they normally have a Saturday family hangout discussing politics, drama and every other thing that was worth discussing.
Mr. Oscar, Ben's father was a colleagues of Mr. Austin, Chika's father. There friendship united the two kids as friends. They almost became inseperable.
In Jss3b' Ben was the class president and with his authority he exempted Chika from anything stressful. Their classmates thought it unfair but Ben didn't care at all.
On a Thursday morning, all the students were in the assembly ground, Ben and Chika were the only ones in class. From the look on his face she could tell he had a lot to say but didn't find words.
"What do you want to tell me, Ben?' Chika asked
Nothing serious" he replied. " I wanted to confirm, if you had a valentine date that's all" He added.
The shock on Chika's face was palpable because that was the last direction she had least expected.
Ben noticed the shock on her face and drifted into another conversation acting like he didn't almost drop a bomb.
Valentines day was on a Monday after the previous week.
Every class has a red ribbon littered on the floor. The teachers knew better than to interfere.
Every commended Jack because of his effontry to give the PHE teacher a Valentine gift. The PHE teacher was a copper and the prettiest human being we'd ever seen. I'm speaking for the boys now.
On Friday, Jack had told us of his plansbut we thought he was just being Jack. Funny and presumptuous. But he really brought the A game.
The funny thing about the story was that our Chemistry teacher, also bought a gift for the PHE teacher. This would have been better if Jack's gift was just a chocolate, but Jack got her a new phone because her previous phone was broken as we all in the class had noticed from the way she joggled it before taking a call.
The chemistry teacher bought her a Nokia Torchlight phone, Jack bought her a Samsung Galaxy.
The whole school was in turmoil. I didn't really follow the story to see what happened later but I understood that she called Jacks parents and figured out that he had been saving his money for a while to get her the phone. Nobody knew how long it must have taken him to get that sum of money.
We all knew Jack as a transparent boy, that was why it was believable when he said he had saved it.
The attention was drawn to Chika and Ben because it was obvious that Amanda had been looking for ways to befriend Ben but it was pointless. She had to befriend chika and all of a sudden the three of them became a clique. It was still obvious that Ben liked Chika, and Amanda liked Ben. A funny clique we had then.
On the Valentines day, we all ran to call Chika from the class because Ben had a surprise for her. But we made it look as if Ben was in trouble.
As usual Chika ran out to go save Ben. As soon as she got to the field, she stood there waiting, which was frankly a little bit weird. We were waiting expecting Ben to do the needful and give her the Valentine gift, but he didn't until Amanda came.
He knelt down finally revealing the package that was hidden behind him all this while. He brought out a flower and a letter.
The weird thing was he gave the flower to Amanda and gave the letter to Chika. Chika stood there shocked as to what had happenes. Amanda was so excited that she got a flower from her crush. Chika seeing her excited she was, also handed her the letter and left the field.
The joy increased. Amanda felt like the whole world now belong to her.
Later on we discovered that Bens friend advised him that it would be weird to give a gift to chika and ignore Amanda. That was why he took the foolish step.
This was the weirdest Valentine in the history of valentine. It was an opportunity for Ben to confess his feelings for chika but he missed it and he never got an opportunity in school again because soon after the head boy is ss3 asked chika to be his girlfriend and she said YES.
