She was only focusing on positive outcomes. Only the good ones. They weren't the only outcomes, clearly. Well, it was as good as it gets. You wouldn't want to be the one it happened to, but sure as shit if it did you would laugh. I didn't often laugh, but this time it was uncontrollable. Like a tide of madness always lapping at the beach. A quiet sobbing giggle. Robert Heinlein was right we laugh because of the pain.
The doctor and mom talking had been going for longer than should have been possible. They didn't seem to notice my laughing fit either. I mean... how many things could there be to know about eye care?
When we finally left the world hadn't changed any except we now had a handful of prescriptions that need to be filled. My fit had fortunately stopped earlier. Then we went to get the medicines filled. While we waited mom made chit-chat, and we strolled around the store shopping for things we needed at home. Grabbed some more food and drinks since I was now going to be home much more than normal.
"You know your eye situation reminds me that we should go see your grandfather." My eye situation? She couldn't even call it what it was. "He has not been in the best of health lately and you now have even more in common."
He was the most fun person in my life everyone else was too serious. And he told the best stories, all probably lies, but still great.
The best ones were about how he lost his eye. It was never the same story twice. Those and his adventure stories. He once told me the story of how he "accidentally" caused the Great Depression. If grandpa or anyone in the family had written them down. He would have been one of the greatest novelists of all time.
But barely anyone in the family paid him any mind. Mom was the only one of his children that still talked with him on more than a yearly basis.
"Yeah, it would be good for getting my mind off my troubles." I admitted. Since he was sick this would be one of my last chances to hear him tell one of his stories. It would definitely make my week better. As we loaded up the belt at the checkout counter. All a sudden there were dazzling fireflies in my hurt eye. The pain doubled, tripled, 10 times the pain at its previous worst and the pain kept growing. Something ran down the left side of my face. Too wet.
