'Mom I am going outside to play,' said Ela a child.
'But you just finished your lunch and it is not afternoon yet. The sun is on top of your head. Rest for sometime and then go to play,' told her mother.
'I want to play with the butterflies now, see there are many of them there outside.'
Ela's mother looked out the window at her garden and was surprised to see so many butterflies hovering over the flower garden. She likes gardening and she loves flowers. So it was not a miracle her garden was always filled with blooming blazing colors. But she has never seen these many butterflies at once! It was soothing her eyes. Hovering from flower to flower it created a mesmerizing magical environment. She was so astonished at the scene, she forgot about her daughter.
Crack!
There was a sound of breaking something. This sound brought her back to reality with a shock that the plate on her hands also fell and broke. The thought of something bad happening to her daughter struck her and she worried and called for her and ran to the source.
'Ela! Ela! What happened? Are you alright baby?'
A scared Ela was standing in front of a broken mirror.
'I did not break the mirror, please believe me Mom,' she bursts into tears, 'I was playing with Boo-boo and it just broke!'
'That's alright Ela. Come to Mama, be careful there are shards do not cut your foot.'
With Ela, her mom moved to their living room. Ela was still shocked and afraid.
'Mom, will I now die?' asked Ela.
'Why sweety? Why are you talking absurdly like that?'
'Nana said that broken mirror can harm the person. It brings bad luck.'
Ela's Mom started laughing, 'Oh Dear, that is just a superstition, there are no bases in those. Do not believe those things.'
'What is su-su-super?'
'Superstition,' a smile was on her face, 'Those are some weird things people believe can bring good luck or bad luck, but those are not real. You will wonder how many weird things people believe.'
'So, broken mirror and others?'
'People believe that if your palm is itching, that is a good sign. If that is the left palm then you would get money and if it is the right palm that is itching, you will meet someone new. Well, it is not universal though, as some people believe an itchy right palm means the inward flow of money and an itchy left palm means money will be wasted. See, how people are confused about what to decipher,' laughed Ela's Mom.
Ela also smiled.
'I can see, my mother-in-law must have told you that, breaking a mirror is bad, as people believe that will bring about 7 years of bad luck. But do not worry dear that is not true.'
'But, Nana also said it is bad luck to walk under a ladder. Uncle Sanchez walked under a ladder the day he was hit by a car. How can this be then Mom?'
'Oh, Ela! That was an accident. Accidents can happen at any time any day. That was only a coincidence.'
Sanchez was their family friend. It was his anniversary, so he was absentminded and the car that bumped into him was in a hurry to bring the driver's pregnant wife to a hospital, so he was also disturbed.
'Looks like these kinds of things have been rooted dip into you mind. We will go visit
a friend of mine after you get up from a nap, you will see how he is still passing his days full of fun, now lie down.'
'Ela wake up darling, get up and freshen up we will be going outside,' told Ela's mother.
Within 15 minutes, Ela woke up, freshened herself, and was ready to go out with her mother. She drove for half an hour and stopped in front of a nice house.
'We have reached dear,' parking the car she walked towards the door and pressed the doorbell.
'Whose house is it Mom?' asked Ela.
'You know people think if a black cat crosses your path, that will bring bad luck. In this house you will see, the owner of the house pet cat and all of those are black. He is a friend of mine.'
'Who is it? Oh, Lina! How are you? You should have called beforehand. And is this little angel Ela?'
'Hi Timothy! How are you? Ela, this is your uncle Tim. Say hi.'
'Hello Uncle Tim,' a nervous Ela said.
'Hello angel. Why are you nervous?' asked Timothy.
'Her Nana told her about some superstitions, and she cannot get those out of her mind. Honestly, you are my only option.'
Lina and Timothy laughed.
'Okay Angel, come to the den of Uncle Tim,' Timothy told Ela to get into his house.
Entering the house, Ela became more uncomfortable. There were many black cats in the room. Not only cats, there were broken mirrors here and there in the room. The entrance of the house is under a ladder!
'See Ela, what did I told you? Suprstitions are not real. If they were any bit real, then Uncle Tim will not be alive,' said Lina.
Timothy and Lina Burst out laughing. Timothy was friendly and Ela was getting normal slowly. They had fun. By the time it was time to return home, Ela was free from all kinds of superstition.
'Goodbye Uncle Tim.'
'Goodbye, little Angel. Remember, before you want something to believe, you have to be logical and think about that thoroughly. Remember coincidences can happen, but that does not mean that things will be repeated over and over again. Nothing can be classified to bring good or bad luck.'
'Okay, Uncle Tim. I will remember that. I will never believe in superstition ever again.'
'That's a good girl.'
Later, when Nana visited Ela again, Ela told Nana the experience she had at Uncle Tim's house and told her Nana to not spread Superstition.
