"There she is!" were the words Jack couldn't wait to hear as they searched for Sally, the German Shephard he was paid to walk for 2 hours. The search had gone on for nearly 3 hours and if anyone knew anything about dogs, especially that breed, it's that their curiosity keeps them going.
The evening had started off like his new normal. Jack, a 15-year-old dog walker, had been to his 7 usual clients and picked up their dogs like always. However, he had no idea how that evening would unfold for him.
He had just lost his job as a tour guide with the Colchester zoo. The loss hurt him because it made no sense how a kid getting their face licked by a monkey was his fault. But a measure had to be taken when the kids' parents threatened to sue.
He needed a job if he would have a chance to get that Mercedes before college so getting paid $20 an hour for dog walking was the next best thing. He did the maths and walked 7 dogs for 2 hours 5 evenings a week.
Sally, the smartest dog in his pack had always been a wanderer and her parents told him every single day when he picked her up. It was like an anthem and he never messed up until today. He probably wouldn't have messed up if it wasn't for his Mitchy showing up at the dog park.
He had been in love with her since 5th grade and while they were friends he never could have the balls to ask her out on a proper date.
That evening, he saw her and when he went over to say hi, she got so excited. A few minutes into their conversation, a guy walked up to them and she introduced him as her new boyfriend. Jack lost his train of thought and that's when all hell let loose.
He contacted the neighbourhood patrol right after that and they began their search. He knew he had to call Sally's owners but he couldn't imagine how bad it would be when he gave them the bad news.
He took the other dogs home and searched for 2 more hours. By 9 pm, he held his breath and rang the doorbell of Sally's owners just to hear a bark from the inside.
When they finally opened the door, he saw Sally run up to him with a lot of excitement. He told them what happened and they thought it was funny. They to him how they heard a bark and scratch on the door, they opened up expecting to see him but it was just Sally.
He couldn't believe how well it all turned out, and even when he begged to not be paid for his mistake, they were kind enough to offer him more money for all his troubles.
