China has begun developing a new technology, namely gestational robots, a type of robot designed to undergo the pregnancy process like a normal human. Later, this robot can become pregnant using an artificial womb, complete from the process of fetal development to delivery. Nutrition for the fetus will also be distributed through a special tube system.
This project is being developed by Kaiwa Technology in Guangzhou. The scientific team in this project is led by Zhang Qifeng, an alumnus of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. The prototype is targeted to be introduced to the public in 2026. However, on the other hand, many question the ethical side, such as the emotional relationship between mother and child, the origin of egg and sperm cells, and the psychological impact on babies born from artificial wombs.
