Visiting the Bararida Zoological and Botanical Park
Hacía años no visitaba el zoológico de la ciudad conocido como el parque Bararida, ubicado en una zona muy céntrica en la ciudad, y a pesar que está entre dos avenidas muy transitadas al entrar te olvidas que estás en medio de la ciudad, esa era la razón principal de visitar el zoológico, para Zully y para mí han sido días difíciles por lo que necesitábamos conectar un poco con algo de naturaleza.
I hadn't visited the city zoo, known as Bararida Park, located in a very central area of the city, for years. Even though it's between two busy avenues, when you enter, you forget that you're in the middle of the city. That was the main reason for visiting the zoo. Zully and I had been having a difficult time, so we needed to connect with nature a little.
Debo admitir que no soy fan de los zoológicos, porque no estoy de acuerdo con los animales en cautiverio solo que entiendo que la mayoría de los animales que están en el parque son rescatados del mercado negro, donados por circos, o que han sido victimas de cacería ilegal y llegan al parque para ser atendidos por el cuerpo de veterinarios, por lo que más estén encerrados son animales que no pueden ser devueltos a su hábitat natural. A todo esto se le suma que el Zoológico hace décadas posee un programa de reproducción de Cóndor de los Andes un animal en peligro de extinción y que el Parque Bararida ha sido pionero.
I must admit that I am not a fan of zoos, because I disagree with keeping animals in captivity, but I understand that most of the animals in the park are rescued from the black market, donated by circuses, or have been victims of illegal hunting and arrive at the park to be cared for by the veterinary team, so most of the animals that are locked up are animals that cannot be returned to their natural habitat. Added to all this is the fact that for decades the zoo has had a breeding program for the Andean condor, an endangered animal, and that Bararida Park has been a pioneer in this field.
Recientemente me enteré hablando con uno de los guardaparques (olvide su nombre) que desde hace algún tiempo para aca el parque en cierta época del año se convierte en una base temporal de descanso para un montón de aves migratorias y que en estos momentos se encuentran construyendo una torre de observación de aves. Hay que tener presente que el parque además de ser un zoológico es un parqué botánico, por lo que hay un montón de árboles y plantas, hay zonas dentro del parque que al caminar por allí parece que atraviesas un bosque.
I recently learned from one of the park rangers (I forgot his name) that for some time now, at certain times of the year, the park has become a temporary resting place for many migratory birds, and that they are currently building a bird watching tower. It should be noted that the park is not only a zoo but also a botanical garden, so there are many trees and plants, and there are areas within the park where walking through them feels like walking through a forest.
Para este punto quiero mencionar dos cosas, lo primero es que la entrada al parque tiene un costo de $2 USD por persona, tengo entendido que niños menores de 5 años y adultos mayores (tercera edad) pueden entrar sin costo. Lo segundo que deseo mencionar es que lamento no haber tomado tantas fotos como lo hubiese deseado, pero, comprendan no estaba allí en mi rol de creador de contenido sino como un ser humano cansado, agotado de muchas cosas y quería desconectarme de la cotidianidad avasallante y conectar con pachamama.
At this point, I would like to mention two things. First, admission to the park costs $2 USD per person. I understand that children under 5 and seniors (third age) can enter free of charge. The second thing I want to mention is that I regret not having taken as many photos as I would have liked, but please understand that I was not there in my role as a content creator but as a tired human being, exhausted from many things, and I wanted to disconnect from the overwhelming daily routine and connect with Mother Earth.
En medio del parque hay una gran laguna y en medio una isla, donde hay una cafetería, muchas áreas verdes donde puedes estar, una tirolina donde puedes lanzarte y atravesar la laguna que aunque no sea natural, hay enormes peces, gigantescas tortugas, patos y para hacer de la experiencia algo más inmersiva, puedes rentar (alquilar) un bote y recorrer la laguna sobre el bote. Algo que me gustó mucho es que hay varios tipos de bote, algunos que son eléctricos, por no necesitas remar, otros tienen pedales y un pequeño timón, pues lo pones a andar pedaleando y otros son tipo canoa en donde debes remar. No nos montamos en estos botes, confieso que no se nadar y el agua en grandes cantidades me da un poco de miedo aunque si me he montado en pasadas ocasiones.
In the middle of the park there is a large lagoon and an island in the middle, where there is a café, lots of green areas where you can relax, a zip line where you can launch yourself and cross the lagoon. Although it is not natural, there are huge fish, giant turtles, ducks, and to make the experience even more immersive, you can rent a boat and explore the lagoon. Something I really liked is that there are several types of boats, some of which are electric, so you don't need to row, others have pedals and a small rudder, so you can pedal to move them, and others are canoe-like, where you have to row. We didn't get on these boats, as I confess that I can't swim and large bodies of water scare me a little, although I have been on them on previous occasions.
Ahora bien, quiero hablar un poco más sobre mi parte favorita del parque, el Serpentario, al que para acceder tienes que pagar una entrada puesto que eso no lo incluye la entrada general que pagas al ingresar al parque. Por tan solo $1 por persona tienes acceso, lo que siempre me ha gustado es que hay jóvenes guardaparque que te dan un tour guiado por todo el lugar y te hablan de cada serpiente, te mencionan sus características principales, curiosidades de cada una y sobre todo si es venenosa o no.
Now, I want to talk a little more about my favorite part of the park, the Serpentarium, which requires an additional admission fee since it is not included in the general admission ticket you pay to enter the park. For just $1 per person, you get access. What I've always liked is that there are young park rangers who give you a guided tour of the whole place and tell you about each snake, mentioning their main characteristics, interesting facts about each one, and, above all, whether they are venomous or not.
No conté cuantos ejemplares había, pero, si no mal recuerdo, estaban las serpientes endémicas de Venezuela en su mayoría por no decir todas, y además un montón de serpientes de un montón de lugares y vaya a saber Dios como rayos llegaron hasta aquí, que como les mencioné la mayoría son rescatadas del mercado negro. Me asombró mucho ver serpientes propias del centro de África, y Asia. Siempre me han gustado las serpientes por lo que confieso que el recorrido lo disfruté, Zully por su parte la visita al serpentario le recordó mucho a uno de sus tíos que en la Gran Sabana, hace décadas tenía un serpentario personal, pues recogía el veneno de las serpientes y lo enviaba a la Universidad Central de Venezuela para producir suero antiofídico y que lo recuerda con cariño tristeza puesto que en la grabación de un documental, una de sus serpientes venenosas se estresó por las cámaras y luces, y lo mordió repetidas veces causándole la muerte.
I didn't count how many specimens there were, but if I remember correctly, there were most, if not all, of the snakes endemic to Venezuela, as well as a bunch of snakes from a bunch of places, and God knows how the heck they got here, since, as I mentioned, most of them are rescued from the black market. I was very surprised to see snakes native to Central Africa and Asia. I've always liked snakes, so I confess that I enjoyed the tour. For Zully, the visit to the serpentarium reminded her a lot of one of her uncles who, decades ago, had a personal serpentarium in the Gran Sabana. He collected snake venom and sent it to the Central University of Venezuela to produce antivenom serum. She remembers him with fond sadness because, while filming a documentary, one of his poisonous snakes became stressed by the cameras and lights and bit him repeatedly, killing him.
Luego del paréntesis anecdótico, debo decir que no todo en la visita fue de color de rosas, algo que no me gustó para nada es que hay una invasión de zamuros (buitres) un ave carroñera que en lo personal no le tengo demasiado agrado. Hay demasiados, es incontable cuantos pudimos ver no solo sobrevolando el parque sino dentro, sobre todo el hábitat de los avestruces.
After this anecdotal digression, I must say that not everything about the visit was rosy. Something I didn't like at all was the invasion of vultures, a bird of prey that I personally don't like very much. There are too many of them; we saw countless numbers not only flying over the park but also inside it, especially in the ostrich habitat.
Otra de las cosas que no me gustó es que muchos animales se ven un poco hambrientos, no se como es la realidad del parque, pero, parece que no es la mejor de todas. Honestamente espero que pueda mejorar y que los responsables se preocupen por los animales como es debido, aunque parece que no es así, porque no hace demasiado, un mes quizá murió la nutría y no fue precisamente por vieja o enfermedad ya se encontraba en buenas condiciones, de hecho, le habían renovado su hábitat mejorándolo mucho para su comodidad. Fue algo muy lamentable.
Another thing I didn't like is that many animals look a little hungry. I don't know what the reality of the park is like, but it doesn't seem to be the best. I honestly hope that it can improve and that those responsible take proper care of the animals, although it seems that this is not the case, because not too long ago, maybe a month ago, the otter died, and it wasn't exactly because of old age or illness. It was already in good condition; in fact, they had renovated its habitat, improving it greatly for its comfort. It was very unfortunate.
Me gustaría cerrar esta reseña de la visita al parque Bararida contándoles algo asombroso que tuvimos la oportunidad de contemplar. Al caminar por la zona de los primates (chimpancés que tiene como 20 años en el parque), se nos acercó un guardaparque que de manera muy amable nos pidió que nos alejemos porque iban a hacer algo (no sé qué) con los chimpancés y cuando hay personas cerca ellos no suelen colaborar. Tengo entendido que son muy traviesos. Lo cierto es que hay un guardaparques que tiene toda la vida trabajando en el parque y ha estado de cerca con los chimpancés desde que llegaron y estos lo ven como uno más del grupo, incluso lo respetan como si fuese el alpha.
I would like to conclude this review of our visit to Bararida Park by telling you about something amazing that we had the opportunity to witness. As we were walking through the primate area (chimpanzees that have been in the park for about 20 years), a park ranger approached us and very kindly asked us to move away because they were going to do something (I don't know what) with the chimpanzees, and when there are people around, they don't usually cooperate. I understand that they are very mischievous. The truth is that there is a park ranger who has worked in the park his entire life and has been close to the chimpanzees since they arrived, and they see him as one of the group, even respecting him as if he were the alpha.

We moved away a little, far enough to be out of the area, but close enough to watch what they were going to do. One chimpanzee, who didn't want to pay much attention and was waving a huge log around, caught his attention, and this chimpanzee approached him with a respectful gesture, showing him the palm of his hand, a gesture they make in nature to apologize. I didn't document everything I'm telling you because I admit I was really amazed by what we were seeing.
