Noch eine Kuriosität aus Bulgarien: Das zweite Atomkraftwerk in Belene, das niemals gebaut wurde.
Bulgarien betreibt bereits seit den 1970-er Jahren ein Atomkraftwerk in Kosloduj an der Donau. Im Zuge der EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen mussten die ältere Blöcke 3 und 4 aus Sicherheitsgründen abgeschaltet werden.
Davor hat das Kraftwerk 44% des Elekrizitätsbedarfs von Bulgarien gedeckt und Bulgarien konnte sogar Strom exportieren.
Noch während der kommunistischen Zeit wurde ein zweites Atomkraftwerk an der Donau, diesmal in Belene, geplant, das allerdings nie gebaut wurde und zu einem Politikum wurde, obwohl die Bulgaren eher für Atomkraft sind.
Das geplante Projekt wurde immer wieder verzögert zum Beispiel wegen der Finanzierung, ob es 5 oder 6 Milliarden Euro kosten darf, ob Russland oder die USA das Kraftwerk bauen sollen, ob ein knappes Referendum wegen der geringen Beteilgigung gültig ist oder nicht etc.
Noch heute ist ein riesiges Areal in Belene mit Stacheldrahtzahn abgesperrt, es wurde mehrmals bereits mit dem Bau begonnen und es gibt auch schon Hinweistafeln, die das Atomkraftwerk ankündigen.
Ob das Kraftwerk aber je gebaut wird, ist fraglicher denn je, auch unter den neuen geopolitischen Bedingungen.

Bulgaria has been operating a nuclear power plant in Kozloduy on the Danube since the 1970s. In the course of the EU accession negotiations, the older units 3 and 4 had to be shut down for safety reasons.
Before that, the power plant covered 44% of Bulgaria's electricity needs and Bulgaria could even export electricity.
During the communist period, a second nuclear power plant was planned on the Danube, this time in Belene, but it was never built and became a political issue, although Bulgarians tend to be in favor of nuclear power.
The planned project was delayed again and again, for example, because of financing, whether it should cost 5 or 6 billion euros, whether Russia or the U.S should build the power plant, whether a close referendum is valid or not because of the low participation, and so on.
Even today, a huge area in Belene is fenced off with barbed wire, construction has already begun several times, and there are already street signs announcing the nuclear power plant.
But whether the power plant will ever be built is more questionable than ever under the new geopolitical conditions.
