Dear Diary,
I settle now to sleep, day or night I know not. In the ever-dark of the Arcane Pits one cannot be sure. One cannot be sure of anything.
A fortnight ago I reached Talmuth weary. I had gotten my pack back from the sneak-thief who I found kneeling in my tent just before dawn. The morning was spent cleaning the blood off the Criminal's Katana and burying the body. I reached Talmuth at midday, thirsty for sweet well water.
This is a land of opportunity if you are clever enough so I took all the gold that I had on me and immediately started investing in Mysterious Scrolls. The Royal Emporium is an odd beast and uses and orderbook style pricing system. With patience and the right pricing you can find yourself buying and selling items at the exact same time for massive profit. I spent about a week perfecting my technique and acquiring the tools I would need for more dangerous opportunity.
Once provisioned with adequate tools and armor I approached the gaping maw of the dungeon. I had a dream in my hear and fish in my sack so ... why not head in?
What a fool I was. Now I'm trapped underground and even for how long I cannot say. Time moves strangely in the ever-dark, it moves like a Skulk.
I quickly learned the ways of battle and found that my success or failure would hinge on energy conservation. Fighting with sword or bow I'd need to know when to attack swiftly and when to swing with all my might. My katana could dispatch the malformed Caraghoul and Grumblers with a single swing but , when surrounded or facing heartier foes I needed to attack with all my might. When all seemed lost and my energy was empty I found my survival instinct would allow a small amount of my energy to regenerate so I can always be ready to fight. Perhaps I might live yet.
I've come to realize this is a game of survival not some door-kicking hack-and-slack. If I move and attack at the right pace and time there is nothing in here that can kill me. That said, I did nearly panic when I found myself covered in Skulk webbing and having arrows rain down on me from Hoodgoblins hiding in the shadows. We cant let that happen again. I'm running out of fish.
I sometimes imagine what I fool I would have been to enter this place without my tools. The fishing and mining are the only things that break up the endless slaughter. When I see bubbles on the water of the sparkle of ore on stone I know that, for the moment, the killing can stop.
I grow curious about these creatures. Not the shambling undead, lurching towards me with dull lifeless eyes. No I wonder about the Watchers and Hoodgoblin. There seem to be different types and the simple fact they armor themselves points to simple intelligence. What are they doing in these shadowed halls when I am not here cutting them down. Do they live? Do they laugh? Do they love? I'm I the only monster in this place?
I must get a hold of myself. I need sleep.
Dear Diary,
It has been longer. More days, perhaps a week. I've found two false exits, a spiders nest, and
I'm down to my last cooked fish. I tried to cook a wild sea bass by torch but it only became covered in pitch and soot. How could a sea bass possibly have made it into the fountain in a dungeon this deep? Get a handle on yourself Philip.
I met a friend, thankfully. They are a candy-floss colored sheep and I call them Herbert. They follow me everywhere I go and the evils of this place seem to ignore them. I woke up to a Grumbler gnawing on my boot. If I had let it go for a few minutes they might have been able to get a taste of toe.
Dear Diary
There is whispering in the dark. Someone shot me with a dark and it smells like a canned fart. I'm really really sick. No more fish now. Sword us useless now. I can only shoot my bow from the darkness. Herbert's hatred of furniture scares me. His bloodlust cannot be sated. It's only a matter of time until he turns on me...
