Weekend Ranked
My weekend went well enough trying out a brand new deck on the fly, while making adjustments after every few games at the start until I found the list I liked the most. Overall I scored 18/25 (I lost one due to a bug, so I should've gone 19/25, RIP).
The List
The list I ultimately settled on is this:
There are so many legendary cards that it looks a little too disorganized for my liking, however, you really can't run 2x Well of Power as it is a dead card if not played on curve, but well worth mulliganing for. The Mirror would be very questionable to run 2x - it's a dead card against death's hard removal or Light's Levy. City Planner is an interesting card I wanted to try out. Normally I'd play Helian Elite here, but 1. Nature is still the most prevalent matchup and they have Lightning Strike and The Hunt for Helian Elite. That makes City Planner very interesting to me as a three-wide board with a collective 20 health! 2. Avatar of Magic needs creatures to burn. City Planner gives you just that. While it didn't come into play this weekend, I have many times in the past been ready for an OTK and there's just nothing to hit. You can only hit your own Avatar 3 times for 15 face damage until it is dead, so you need a couple other bodies on board.
This deck does rely heavily on many Genesis cards.
There's no replacement for many of these, namely the OTK combo.
The Combo
One of the most satisfying ways to win with this deck is to cycle your cards and keep track of where they are in your deck. If you can Forsee and send Avatar of Magic to the bottom of your deck, when it comes back around you play Frey and grab Avatar of Magic as a 2 cost OTK machine. You can now play AoM and a 1 Mana spell and still have 6 Mana left over to send infinite 1-Mana 5 damage Beams into your opponents face.
Reflections
Ultimately I don't think City Planner is that good, I'd rather run 2x Elites or add in a Poly or Echo. I also think the early game is still a little wobbly against super fast aggro decks. I'm unsure about Ancient Texts. It is very versatile in the early game or perfect for starting off the AoM OTK combo. But it just might not be effective enough. Perhaps running either Vow of Learning or Defend the Ramparts and tossing in a structure would help. Once CSR is here, Wyrmbreath moves to a 4 mana deal 6 dmg!! So that'll definitely be finding it's way into the deck, as finding answers for Nature's 6/6's was a chore.
I love Ramp Magic and I'm happy it is back! Let me know what you think in the comments!
