Intro
We can all look at Divine Order card prices and see how bad an idea it is to buy Divine Order card packs. Mortal Judgement will also be unlimited - and with an even longer discount period. This should give us pause. On the other hand, they've made the new set OP enough that not buying cards means you'll get smoked by those who do. This puts us in a bit of a bind.
The Basics
Buyers' Guide: https://blog.godsunchained.com/2022/04/13/mortal-judgement-buyers-guide/
We've got some new wrinkles. In Divine Order, the discount lasted until $6 million in packs had been sold. Now it's $10 million.
With a 20% discount, the prices are:
- Rare Pack: $1.99
- Epic Pack: $5.59
- Leg Pack: $19.99
- Shiny Leg Pack: $119.99
Shiny Legendary packs have never been a winning buy. If you like super expensive lotto tickets where you are expected to lose money, though, then knock yourself out. For the rest of us, we're buying one of the first 3 if at all.
A second wrinkle: In Divine Order, an Epic Pack gave you one guaranteed Rare and one Guaranteed Epic. Now, however, you get 2 epics.
Getting two epics is not good when you consider the distribution of the cards by rarity.
- 80 Commons
- 64 Rares
- 23 Epics
- 30 Legendaries
The market for epics will be flooded faster than rares or legendaries, so we need to consider carefully before buying epic packs that cost >2x a rare pack. Probably a bad idea unless there are some must-have epics for your deck (more to come on that).
My Strategy
The most OP deck from the new set is the 1-mana Anubians. I know this both playing them and playing against them in the PTR. Luckily, I picked up a few 1-drop anubians based on early card leaks (wish I had bought 20x). This means I'll be shooting to play these in the weekend ranked, so let's look at what we need from the new set.
Card list: https://blog.godsunchained.com/2022/04/08/mortal-judgement-the-set/
If you saw 's video on the tier list, you'll remember his final list:
The first thing I notice is that there is only 1 epic in the "A" tier. The "S" tier has a rare and a legendary. "A" tier cards are 3 rares, 2 leggies, and 1 common.
Also, from my play experience, yes Asenath and Semut are amazing, but the deck really doesn't need them. What it depends on from MJ is:
That's a whole lot of commons and rares. Yes, Land of the Dead is big for the deck, but if you don't have the rares/commons, you can't run LotD. You can run the deck without the epic in the short term if you have to and still stomp.
So, putting it all together, it actually looks like I would be better off buying rare packs rather than epics. Land of the Dead is likely to be pricey for a few weeks in the secondary market, but a lot of people will be winning/buying epic packs and each gives 2x.
Legendary packs would probably also be a better choice than epics. They have a guaranteed rare + leggy. However, it's a lot to spend for a 2/30 shot of getting a legendary I need for the deck (3/30 if you decide to run the 7 mana Quorum of Pharaohs). Given I lost most games in the PTR against anubians without ever seeing a legendary, I probably won't go this route.
Broader strategy
OK, so the above is for me specifically (or anyone who owns the relevant anubians from previous sets). But what about in general? Even for me, you're going to be picking up cards from all the gods - not just death. Fakemews to the rescue!
Card counts by tier
- Deception:
- S Tier: 1 common / 1 rare / 1 epic
- A Tier: 3 common / 3 rare / 0 epic
- Light:
- S Tier: 2 rare
- A Tier: 2 common / 5 rare / 1 epic
- Magic:
- S Tier: 1 common / 1 legendary
- A Tier: 2 common / 1 rare
- Nature:
- S Tier: 2 legendary
- A Tier: 1 common / 3 rare / 1 epic / 1 legendary
- War (he hasn't released that vid yet)
OK, so the obvious caveats: this is just one player's opinion and even he might change a lot after seeing what decks get discovered after the set hits. This is still a helpful general guide on what looks good.
There are only 3 epics that reach S or A tier. The War epics honestly don't look stellar either. Maybe Unrestrained Power is people figure out a consistent way to go face for 20+ with relics that isn't foiled by a single frontliner.
Conclusion
It's looking really hard to justify buying epic packs. Right now Divine Order rares have ~42,000 cards each on TokenTrove and range from $0.03 to $1.30 (only 6 cards above $0.30 though). Epics have ~23,000 cards each and range from $0.17 to $5.00 (only 6 cards above $2).
Buying packs at all is a big gamble. You're gambling that the player base skyrockets. (Even then, that's more people buying/earning packs until the set locks.) A skyrocketing player base requires daily P2E and a fully-functional forge (forging shadow+). It also likely requires a thin client. I don't think it requires mobile release, but that would definitely help.
From my perspective, it's hard to justify buying packs. My current strategy: I'll be waiting to see what the commons/rares I need get listed at. If I can pick them up for a few bucks, I'll probably skip packs all together. The downside of this strategy is that they will then 100% nerf the anubian deck and my cards go to 0. Hopefully not before I do well in a few weekend ranked events!
