First let me say, I figured this weekend was going to suck. With the new set up for grabs, everyone was going to be bringing their A game. Even on Wednesday/Thursday, I was still playing random decks and facing off against people trying their damndest to get into Mythic.
Maybe my expectation created the result, or maybe I saw the future, but the result was the same:
Normally, I wouldn't consider such a failure worthy of posting, but just the sheer hilarity of it had me wanting to share.
Olympian War
The new cheap war deck that everyone is running. I was facing it back to back to back. I thought, "what do I have that could counter this?" So I went to the workshop and put together a budget control light. I then immediately lost the first game - but to Olympian War as predicted. I won the next game, but it took TWENTYFIVE turns. Not only that, but it was close most of the time.
My thinking was that order would slow them down and I even added purification/eucos combo for good measure:
But after my one win, I realized I'd rather just lose in 8 turns than win most games playing out to 25 turns (and still would lose some on turn 20 or something).
So then I got excellent advice from . He had just had excellent success with zombies, and I realized that the hard removal from Death would also counter olympian war. So I suited up (except I swapped Neferu which I don't have for chira):
So naturally, this happened:
Ever get that feeling that the game is out to get you? Even though you know it's not true, that everything is just randomly happening, it just feels terrible. I told animo the game hates me and called it a night. 50/50 is fine (if you like deranking), but the constant mirror match was just the opposite of fun.
I also really wish gudecks reported on going first/second, because I went second a LOT. I'd like to make sure it wasn't just my perception.
Anyway, next morning (this morning) I said "OK, if zombies are meta, what can I hard counter with?" Aggro light with vespers and levies of course. I did the holy writ deck.
So naturally:
Oh, there you are war! Luckily, I was at such a low level the first viking war deck was pretty jank. Then the standard olympian war I was able to levy the opening Ashen Child to prevent the snowball and he never hit his combo. I also finally got to go first and curved out into a perfect Asterius at 5.5 with a board full of protected/armored creatures.
Conclusion
I might play those last two games. Could double my reward from 1 Fate pack to 2, but I'm just pretty burnt out and another $2 pack isn't enough motivation.
Bring on the new set!
