Hey everyone,
Protected and Ward are two terms in game that we always see and hear. As simple as these both terms are, there might be some situations where you miss a certain piece of information about them that might ruin a game for you, and that exactly what happened to me in a game.
So I decided to do this post in case any new or old player out there did not know this in hope that he does not do the same mistake I did.
So in this post I will go through these 2 terms in details and show you how missing a small detail about them made me lose!
First of all let's see what the exact definition of protected is:
Protected:Protected absorbs the first instance of damage taken by protected creature or god as long as it is greater than zero. So a protected creature will absorb the next source of damage dealt to him.
Ward:Cards with Ward are protected from one enemy spell or god power effect and war will block the next non-attack source of damage.
Now let's look at what type of damage and spells exist in the game:
Altogether there are 6 type of spells and damage source combine which are:
Deal Damage:Which is any sort of damage dealt that does not come from a normal attack example: Canopy Barrage
Sleep: Which makes your creatures sleep
Transform: Any spell that makes your creature transform into something
Destroy: Any spell that automatically destroys a creature
Order: Which gives your creature order
Direct Damage: Which is any damage dealt by an opponent creature
So as we can see, with the definition of both ward and protected and every source of damage and spells, we come to this conclusion:
Protected: Blocks Deal Damage Spells and Direct Damage only
Ward: Blocks Transform, Sleep, Deal Damage and Destroy
Now as simple as this may be, why did I go through all this in details. Here I will speak about my mistake hopefully someone will learn from it:
My Mistake:
It was a matchup when I was using the God of Light and I went against the God of War.
Now as we all know, war decks usually have a lot of protected on top of the high strength that they get. Yes I know, literal headache XD
Now here was the situation:
At 4 mana, he had 1 protected creature and 1 normal on board, and 1 had one with high HP and it was my turn. In my hand I had the Imperious Smite card.
His protected creature had 3 strength while the non-protected one had 2.
Since destroy is not a source of damage and is a direct spell, the protected creature would die instantly and that is where I was ignorant.
I expected the destroy to be block by protected because it is trying to kill the creature but I was wrong. If I played it back then I would have taken control of the board and win the game probably after it, but I played a creature and it ended up killed for nothing with the protected strong creature of my opponent!
This is why I decided to do this post in hope that I might help someone avoid this mistake I did!
Conclusion
No matter how minor, or obvious things might be in this game, we might always get in a situation where the unexpected happens. And there might small gaps in our game knowledge that can make the big difference!
So I wanted to share my experience and my silly mistake with everyone hoping it might benefit someone in the future despite being a little bit obvious we never know!
So that was it for this post hope it was helpful to someone and maybe me being stupid ended up doing good for someone else :p
Mad love, Peace out <3
