It's practically halfway through the month of June, the time when supposedly regular classes start in all level. But unfortunately, most of the schools around has not started the class yet due to the present pandemic that the whole world is facing.
I heard that following the new normal, some of the schools are operating an online class already although as far as I know it's not really official. While online classes could be the wisest thing to do for education to continue just to keep away from being inflicted with covid19 however there are a lot of major issues and disadvantages plaguing the industry.
These are some of the issues/disadvantages of online class that experts should be able to resolve in order to make the learning more efficient:
FEEDBACK IS LIMITED
This is true to both the teacher and students. In a regular classroom class, teachers can give feedback easily and directly to the concerned student and likewise, students can ask questions relating to the topic immediately.
With the limited time being spent on online class, I don’t think every single detail about the topic that must be learned by students will be given emphasis, this is because of the fact that online learning lacks time as well as face to face communication which is very important.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS WILL BE JEOPARDIZED
Considering the limited time, a very short hours online class daily compared to the usual which is almost a whole day class, the person who will do the talking most of the time will be the teacher. There will be less discussion and interaction, such that the student cannot exercise, practice or develop fully his or her communication skills.
CHEATING DURING EXAMS
Cheating during online assessment is more likely to happen than when the test is done the traditional way. This is true because they cannot be monitored closely while taking the exams using their personal computers.
ONLINE LEARNING IS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE COMPUTER ILLITERATE
This is very true, there are a lot of students who are not equipped with knowledge in the use of computers or smart phones aside from the fact that in the Philippines alone, statistics shows that there are a lot of household who doesn’t own a computer set or even a good quality smart phone to be used during online classes. This could cause problems along the way.
While online education may be accessible to most people however it doesn’t paint the whole picture. Studies in America showed that even with the booming growth in technological capabilities, a quarter of the population will have major trouble in accessing eLearning as an educational method, thus truly, online classes cannot be a replacement to a traditional education.
So those are some of the issues that the authorities must look into prior to implementing the online class mode of education, this is to ensure and maintain quality learning process although personally while we are still in the midst of the corona virus pandemic, I would prefer an online class than to be in a classroom with people you don’t know if he or she is a carrier of the virus, this is if the opening of classes cannot be moved anymore to a safer time for students to go to school.
