With the 2024 presidential race now in full sail, I look forward to the presidential debates between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. If ABC News takes charge of hosting their first face-off on September 10th, that will be a big-time coup. Those debates must present an idea of who can stand tall against whom.
Trump seems eager for debates, proposing a total of three. I like that he is keen to have more head-on fights with Harris.
You know what?
He is sure of himself and his positions based on that fact alone. Harris agreed to one with ABC but seems more guarded about committing to others. I wonder if she's playing it cautious or wants to see how the first one goes before agreeing to more.
How these debates came about is pretty interesting in and of itself. It was originally supposed to be a debate between Trump and Biden, but with the latter’s withdrawal from the race, Trump’s opponent turned into Harris. That's quite a game changer and I'm curious whether Harris can stand up to being battered on the national stage debating against Trump.
I feel that both campaigns just want to control the narrative around these debates. Trump wants Fox News involved, while Harris's team sticks to the ABC plan for now. It's a chess game, basically, each side trying to set terms that favor their candidate.
These debates shall bring forth very important issues key to the future of our country. Among the issues likely to crop up in the debate would be immigration, the economy, and climate change, hot-button issues I hope they get to. I'd like to hear clear plans and visions for each and not political jabs from both candidates.
I think Trump's criticism, that Harris has not taken many questions since she became the nominee is fair. We should hear from our potential leaders regularly. I do understand, however, when the campaigns are strategic about managing the exposure of their candidates.
These debates become all the more important with polls showing a very close race, and they'll surely tilt some undecided voters and perhaps lead to some opinion changes. These debates, in the final analysis, are an integral part of our democratic process. We have the opportunity to witness the candidates standing together and defending their ideas in combat with one another. I look forward to watching and learning from what Trump and Harris have to say about their potential leadership for our country.
