The Democratic party is a moving target. I believe the latest rumors about President Biden’s resignation have left the political scene in tatters. It is amazing how quickly we have changed our tune from worrying about Biden’s advancing years to whether or not Vice-President Kamala Harris will be able to steer our country through.
Behind the scenes, it seems as if many Democratics are tired of waiting. The feeling around is that with Biden out of the picture, Kamala will be next in line. I think this agreement is being reached not just for reasons of loyalty or convenience but because of how she has conducted herself during these tough times.
It seems to me that Harris has played her cards very well. She has been bold and steadfast in her campaign appearances, avoiding any semblance of opportunism at all costs. I am thinking much of this way of doing things must have greatly impressed some insiders within the party establishment as it could go far long ways towards cementing her status as presumptive nominee if Joe decides not to run again.
This is not to say that the process of selecting a new nominee will be any less complicated. I have heard suggestions ranging from a fast transition to Harris through blitz primaries. Personally, I’d expect tremendous pressure for unity and rapid progress with the election looming so close.
It should be noted that not everyone subscribes to this ascendant narrative on Harris. Some quarters have shown reluctance, such as progressives and “donor class” members. There are doubts over Harris’s historical record as well as queries about her suitability for the presidency. What amuses me is how quickly some Democrats have switched their view of Harris from being a possible liability to becoming the party’s best hope. This only shows how ever changing politics can be and how circumstances influence them strongly.
The thing that mostly stands out to me in this hypothetical scenario is the significance of Biden’s endorsement. I believe if he were to step down and back Harris, it would be a strong sign to the party and could help heal any possible disagreements. Also worth considering is the Republican response to all this. They are probably already sharpening their knives, ready to challenge Harris’ legitimacy and revive past criticisms. If it comes to that, it will be a bitter battle royal.
Ultimately, I think Democratic Party is standing at crossroads. The direction of the 2024 campaign may hang on next few weeks. Whether or not Biden stays and what steps will be taken by his party in case he decides otherwise have immense consequences for post-election period.
