Joe Biden's decision to drop his presidential ambitions for the 2024 race has sent shockwaves across the political world. In my view, this decision is not totally unexpected, it was somehow predictable due to all kinds of pressure put on him regarding his age and fitness for office. It's a bold move that reshapes the whole dynamic of the election.
With Biden coming out to endorse Kamala Harris as his preferred successor, she is now in the limelight as the likely Democratic nominee. I think this both brings opportunities and challenges to the party. Harris brings fresh energy and historic representation as a woman of color, but she's also been a somewhat divisive figure with mixed approval ratings.
The Democratic convention in Chicago is shaping up to be a nail-biter.
I expect there may be some resistance to simply crowning Harris as the nominee. Other ambitious Democrats might see this as their moment to make a play for the top spot.
An exit by Biden at this point will present a real wrench in the campaign strategy for Republicans and Donald Trump. They have put so much into the portrayal of Biden as old and frail that now, with younger alternatives, such as Harris, those lines are simply going to be rendered obsolete. I think they will need to turn to quick-pivot messaging, very likely related to linking whoever heads the Democratic ticket to failures of the Biden administration.
I'll particularly be watching how this shakeup might affect voter enthusiasm and turnout.
Biden fatigue was real, but will Harris or another fresh face invigorate the Democrat base? And on the other side, does the loss of Biden as a foil cool Republican motivation?
The problem lies in the timing.
With some months to go until the first primaries, Democrats are extremely short of time to get behind a new standard-bearer. What I'm afraid of is that this switch, late as it is, will give way to catching up against a rounded Republican front behind Trump.
Ultimately, the decision reflected a deep concern in the Biden team for the future of the country and its party this November. It's a personally difficult choice that speaks to character. Though risky, this sort of Hail Mary pass to Harris and the next generation of Democratic leaders might be exactly what is needed to reinvigorate the race.
Knowing the 2024 election was going to be historic anyway, Biden's exit takes it to a different dimension. American politics sure doesn't disappoint on surprising one now and then.
