I'm sick of it. Any time I turn on the radio, check social media, or drive down the street, I hear and see political ads.
I get it. The stakes are high. But really, do the campaigns think that the constant messaging barrage is going to change anyone's minds at this point? Most of us decided who we were voting for ages ago. All these ads are doing is creating a constant background noise of political bickering that's hard to escape.
But you know what really gets me worried?
The waste of money! Harris's campaign is outspending Trump by huge margins—16 to 1 on Facebook alone! And guess what, there is a total ads budget of over 10 billion dollars.
Just think of all the good such money could do if it weren't being burned for ads that most people tune out anyway.
Not that I am bitter about it, and besides I'm not the only of this opinion. I spoke with friends and family, and it appears all of us are feeling overwhelmed. We are all looking forward to November 6th, not just to have our voices heard, but finally to get a break from the ad onslaught.
The campaigners seem to believe that the more advertising, the better. From where I am sitting, they long since passed the point of diminishing returns. At best, these ads are preaching to the choir and at worst, they're actively turning people off.
I do fear what this portends for future elections.
Are we going to keep seeing this—an incessant rise in ad spend? Are campaigns going to be even more aggressive with targeting individual voters?
It's feeling like we're heading down an unsustainable path.
