The presidential election of 2024 is fast becoming one of the most unpredictable elections anyone has ever seen in their lifetime. It started with a strong belief that Donald Trump was going to have an easy path back to the White House since he was leading by significant margins in the initial polls. That changed, and now Kamala Harris is neck and neck with him.
According to Polymarket, Trump's chances have dropped 13 percentage points over the past month. By contrast, Harris has seen her odds soar 34 percentage points. It appears that surge is linked to President Joe Biden's decision to step back and hand the Democratic mantle over to Harris. The first debate between Trump and Biden was rough for the Democrats: Biden even admitted afterward that he "screwed up." That moment seemed like it could have sealed Trump's advantage.
But Biden stepping aside and Harris entering the fray suddenly puts it in anyone's game.
The odds on Polymarket have fully caught up with what the polling data has been suggesting all along: this race is literally too close to call.
In a recent CBS News poll, Harris held a slight lead over Trump, but within the margin of error, basically a statistical tie. Polling aggregator 538 has shown similar results, where Harris has generally closed these gaps over the past few days.
Beyond these polls, there's another indicator of how things may be shifting: Trump-themed memecoins.
These tokens, like MAGA and Tremp, were booming but have lately taken a nosedive. MAGA is down nearly 38%, while Tremp has fallen by 40%. While it's somewhat of an exaggeration to say that this steep decline means a loss of confidence in Trump again taking the presidency, there are some worrying signs.
What does this mean? It definitely means that this race is far from over, and neither candidate has any clear sailing ahead. The rise of Harris is meteoric, but Trump's resilience has a history of its own. Now begins the great test: in the next few months, both teams will bring out their big guns to rev up campaigns and debate on issues. This isn't going to be an easy election. The dynamics are changing fast, and anything can happen between now and November. Whether one is a die-hard Trump fan or part of the Harris team, one thing's for sure: this race will keep everyone on their toes until the very end.
