Well, in some respects, it certainly looks like former President Donald Trump is at it again. Only this time, however, he takes it to a new level. In a recent social media post, Trump threatened to put in prison anyone involved in whatever he then described as "unscrupulous behavior" during the upcoming election.
Now, I am all for making sure the elections are sufficiently fair, but this kind of rhetoric does tend to get a bit worrisome.
First, Trump's still peddling the false narrative about the 2020 election having been stolen. We've been down this road before, and it led to no good place. Multiple investigations and court cases, none showed evidence of fraud on a mass scale. Here we are, hearing this same old song and dance.
But the gravest thing here is how extensive Trump's threats are this time. He's no longer just threatening his political opponents, now he's targeting lawyers, donors, and even election officials. That's a pretty wide net he's casting there.
I wonder, what does it all say about the folks who dedicate themselves to making our elections work? They're often just ordinary individuals doing a job. The thought of them being threatened with "long-term prison sentences" for simply doing their jobs is, frankly, terrifying.
And let me tell you what it does to the voters.
When a major political figure threatens this sort of thing, it can make for an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. That is the last thing we need when we try to encourage civic participation.
What's ironic is that following the 2020 election, Trump filed dozens of pieces of lawsuit to derail the election results. None succeeded. So who's engaging in "unscrupulous behavior"?
It is also worth considering that election workers have had to live with threats and harassment since the 2020 election. Remember Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss? These two Georgia election workers had their lives turned upside down because of false accusations.
Do we want to see more of that?
Equally disturbing are Trump's comments in Wisconsin: suggesting he does not have to campaign at all if Republicans could just "stop the cheating" is the thinnest of veils in an attempt to delegitimize the electoral process. It lays the groundwork for baseless claims of fraud, should the results not go the way he wants.
I understand the following, of course: Elections are zero-sum games, and emotions run hot. But there's a line between impassioned campaigning and out-and-out intimidation. Trump's latest statements seem to cross that line pretty boldly.
Moving forward in this election cycle, we need to be vigilant. We absolutely need to protect the integrity of our elections, but that protection needs to come through legitimate channels, not through threats and fearmongering.
Let's talk about the problems that concern voters. Let's debate policy and vision about the future of our country. Above all, let's make sure every eligible voter feels free and empowered to cast their ballot without fear of reprisal. Free and fair elections are the bedrock of our democracy. Threats like these undermine that foundation.
