Hace unos dias decidi elaborar una serie de post especialmente dedicados a mostrar y resaltar los juegos tradicionales de mi patria, hoy en la edición número tres quiero presentarles al dueño de los cielos venezolanos EL PAPAGAYO, cometa o volador. Es inevitable recordar a un grupo de musica venezolana llamado Serenata Guayanesa cantando su cancion El Papagayo te invito a escucharla.

Este juego tradicional es el mas popular entre todos en Venezuela, aunque no lo parezca es en la actualidad el más accesible para los niños. Es posible que hayas visualizado grandes, hermosos y coloridos papagayos o cometas en algún cielo venezolano o en cualquier otro país, pero no es de estos tan bellos voladores que te hablaré hoy.

Jugar papagayos implica un proceso largo que amerita dedicación. Comienza buscando la variila o palo indicado que debe ser liviano y no muy grueso, dependiendo del tamano que deseemos hacer el papagayo. Los niños encuentran este primer paso muy divertido, pero las madres lo ven riesgoso, ya que ellos van a buscar estos palos entre los arbustos, montes o pastizales y para cortarlos deben tener encima su navaja, cuchillo u otro elemento cortante. El mejor material según los entendidos es el extraído del bambú. Esta varilla hay que lijarla para eliminar ciertas durezas con el proposito que el palito no quede resbaladizo y se puedan sujetar los hilos. Luego se elige el material con el que lo vamos a cubrir, generalmente los que más se elevan son los que hacemos con bolsas plásticas de supermercado. El hilo o guaral debe ser suave preferiblemente de algodón, aquí usamos el llamado pabilo, aunque algunos jugadores más atrevidos utilizan el hilo de coser o de nylon. Si está dentro de tus posibilidades no estaria de mas tener unos buenos guantes de tela porque si se eleva muy alto el papagayo la presión del hilo al sujetarlo podría lastimarte o cortarte las manos.

Los ninos en mi comunidad no esperan la época de la semana santa que es cuando se acostumbra a volar papagayos, entre los meses de abril y mayo aquí en Venezuela la brisa es la ideal para que estos se eleven muy alto, incluso he visto a varios jugadores dejándolos elevados soltandoles el hilo, ya que recogerlos es casi imposible.
Recuerdo con mucho agrado las competencias que hacían mi hermano menor con sus amiguitos, desde la azotea o platabanda de la casa volaban cada uno el suyo haciéndolos llegar muy lejos, para aquel entonces se les colocaba media hojilla en la cola con la intención de tumbar los demás papagayos impidiendo que volaran mas lejos y mas altos. Cuando eso papagayos caían los dueños corrían a recuperarlos, claro, si estaban rescatables dentro de lo posible.
Habrás notado en el cableado de electricidad, por sobre arboles y techos algunos papagayos enrollados y abandonados, Estos son los lugares en los que los duenos jamas podrian llegar para recuperarlos.

El papagayo ha sido utilizado en las instituciones como símbolo de libertad o elemento mensajero. Recuerdo en una actividad en el liceo hicimos varios muy coloridos, colocamos el nombre de la institución, fecha y hora. Eso les da felicidad.
