Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to enjoy wrapping Christmas presents for the family!
Hours Are Worth It
Christmas time is one that is totally different when you're a parent or have someone close to you that's a parent and you get to spend time with the little ones during their time of wonder and joy.
Starting from the day after Thanksgiving where we went to go get our tree, all the way up to the last few moments before the holiday are a really special time in a parents life. There are certainly times that are difficult like fighting with them and then threatening Santa's presents not coming if they don't cut the shit lol but otherwise it's a magical and special time!
One of the things that I didn't do a whole lot of in the past was wrap presents. I don't know what the reason was specifically, maybe because my wife was better at wrapping or she enjoyed it more. This year though, she has been sick for the past few weeks but is thankfully now on the mend and getting better and back into normal business things around the house. One of the things she didn't have time to do though, since she was focusing on recovering of course, was to wrap the presents for the little man!
What that meant is that I was tasked with doing the majority of gift wrapping for Christmas! I'm no slouch and I don't shy away from a challenge like this so I took it head on. What I need to get better at though is my wrapping skills! Lol. I was on struggle street for a while!
What I found pretty funny is that I had a list of things that I needed to wrap and I figured I would get it all wrapped in one hour, two tops! LOL that was completely underrated for the amount of time it ended up taking me!
I could certainly have taken the time to be lazy and just throw it all in gift bags and throw some tissue paper on top and call it a day but I wanted to make sure that the wonder and joy that I had as a kid at Christmas time seeing all of the different wrapped gifts under the tree, where you really had no idea what was inside them except that they were a square shape, was not lost on the little man. There are lots of sacrifices that we make as a parent and I felt this one where I sacrificed my sleeping at a more normal time, was completely worth every second of his joy and awe!
All told I spent 7 hours wrapping presents over a few nights LOL holy shit! A little bit off from my original 2 hour estimate :D
I didn't realize all of the things that we bought for him. It's nothing crazy like 500 dollar gaming consoles and shit. It's a lot of smaller things that he enjoys such as Lego here or Hot Wheels race cars but it's nice to be able to pack up many different things that will go a long way at entertaining him for the upcoming year.
One of the things that we wanted to do though is make sure that we didn't mark most of the gifts as from Santa. These days, money isn't flowing as freely as it was in the past, not that it was ever freely flowing but it's not as easy to earn a dollar. This means that we want him to understand that Santa does bring him some things but the majority of his gifts are from his parents and not some magical dude that's got unlimited funds and can make expensive shit appear out of thin air. That world would be nice in a way but for us, we want him to still get the wonder of Christmas and thinking that there's a dude coming in through the door (since we don't have a chimney lol) to drop off presents but these are practical presents and small toys not the brand new iPad or GoPro's. Those gifts would always come from the parents because the kids need to know that their parents spent their hard earned money to get the kid those things, not a magical creature.
I know that in a few hours after this post is scheduled to land, we will be waking up and getting to share the joys of having a child that is not tainted by the ugliness of the world for a little bit longer, and gets to enjoy his youth the way that I did and feel that every child should. These are the days that make all the headaches and stresses of the world and being a parent in this day and age, worth every millisecond.
