Recently I bought something that of course every man really needs: a drone or quadcopter. Not one of the fancy models of DJI but an entry level drone, just to play with it and see if like flying one. After some research I decided on the ZLRC SG906 Pro.
After I ordered it with Aliexpress I had to wait some three weeks before it finally arrived. I guess I should be happy however that it did come as Corona times had its effects on trading and transportation routes from China to Europe.
The SG906 features a camera that shoots 4K photos and 2048 x 1088 video footage. It has a 2 axis gamble, meaning the video it shoots should be fairly shake free. There is also a slot for a micro SD card, so the drone can save footage directly to the card instead of to your phone. That way you don't loose recordings because of a wonky WiFi connection between the drone and your phone.
The drone comes in a handy carrying bag. Inside the hag you find the drone, the controller, spare propellers and of course a manual.
ZLRC offers the option to buy the drone with one, two or three batteries. Each battery is supposed to give a flight time of some 23 minutes, so I ordered three batteries. Then we fly can for about an hour before we have to recharge the batteries. Recharging a battery of the SG906 Pro takes 5 hours. That's a second reason why three batteries is a good choice.
ZLRC follows the design of a foldable drone. The four arms can be folded in to make the drone smaller so that it can be transported easily. The drone can be controlled by a phone as well as by the controller. When the phone is connected by WiFi to the drone, the app shows in real time the image of the cameras of the drone. Well, there is a slight delay, so it can not really be used to fly it in first person view. Nevertheless, it offers the option to make 3D images so you can use your virtual reality device to view the flight image in 3D.
Here's the drone in action, flying low.
As it is an entry level drone, it certainly does not have a high end camera. Nevertheless, it makes some nice photos, especially when flying high. Here are two examples.
As we are going to the French Alpes for the holidays, I'm looking forward to make some nice photos and video footage.
