The little bird here is known as the Rufous- bellied niltava! The bird can be black and orange or blue and orange in color depending on how the feathers scatter incoming light. The niltava in this painting is male and on the other hand, its female counterpart is a completely different color. It’s olive- brown in color. The Rufous-bellied niltava can be found in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, India and a few other countries! The way the components in the feathers of birds scatter light in order to give a particular coloring is pretty fascinating especially when it comes to the color blue!
Process!
Materials: Reeves Gouache paint, Winsor & Newton watercolor and brushes, Sinoart sketchbook, Gerstaecker brushes
I made a sketch of both the bird and the Jkai. I had it in mind for the painting as a whole to be similar to a fashion editorial so I chipped in a few of my personal floral motifs
I made use of watercolor for the bird as I wanted it to have the rich blue hue I was sure to get with watercolor
In line with yesterday’s painting, my wash layer came out a bit neater today. This time around I added my second layers after the first wash layer was dry, I did the opposite for yesterday’s painting hence the patches.
I intended for the black jacket to be velvet, but… let’s just say I’m a little out of practice when it comes to illustrating certain clothing. So I’m hoping to do a little more practice in that area.
I enjoyed painting the floral motifs. I made use of pink, yellow and a very light lime color for the florals.
