Early this year I went with my mom to visit someone at a developing area in a city, I was blown away by the lush green as I viewed from the car’s window as we navigated the road riddled with potholes, then I saw it! The pink was absolutely unmistakable, I’d seen it on Pinterest, but it was right before me. I couldn’t be anymore excited, it was a lotus flower, they were everywhere and I honestly didn’t expect the leaves to be so huge! I mourned the fact that I didn’t come along with a camera and begged my mom that I use her phone to take a picture when we finally arrived at our destination. As we drove back home, I found it sad that, in a few more years, those lotus flowers I was so excited to see, would have been replaced by buildings as it was an estate that was being built…
But then again, the lotus flower is fascinating in itself. Every night , the gorgeous flower goes back into the water and miraculously springs back up to the surface all clean and shiny the next morning! Plus the lotus seeds have been said to be able to last over a thousand years. It’s a nice symbol of rebirth and resilience. Nature always finds its way to survive while at the same time giving us valuable lessons to learn : )
Process
I made use of Staedtler pencils and my Sinoart sketchbook
I sketched out the flower and the leaves. I made use of my 2H pencil this time, and less of the B pencil. I intended to have as much detail as possible. After building up the form of the sketch, I proceeded to add the reflection. One trick to drawing reflections is that it is always vertical, visualize a mirror image. I used to make the mistake of changing the direction of the reflection on the water’s surface when painting. I really loved how this turned out!
Close ups on the drawing!
