Hello everyone...today's post is the third drawing I made for my Jang Hyuk Portrait Series. You can read about the first two portraits in these posts:
As previously mentioned, this series showcases portraits of selected characters Jang Hyuk played in films, dramas, or variety shows. To those who don't know who Jang Hyuk is, he is a South Korean action actor who is well-known for not using body doubles for almost all of his stunt scenes. I am a big fan of his and I initiated this series as a way for me to "jump-start" my "drawing momentum" after being stuck in an art block for almost a year.
I am choosing his character Kim Do-Hyun that he played in the K-drama Midas. This drama was aired on South Korea's SBS network from February to May 2011. Yup, this is an old drama, and as you can see in the picture, Jang Hyuk looks a lot younger than in the previous two portraits.
❤️ Kim Do Hyun From Midas ❤️
Who is Kim Do Hyun?
Kim Do-hyun is an intelligent man with a modest upbringing. He is the top student in his class at one of the top-tier law schools in the country. While looking for prospective jobs, he is recruited as an attorney for an affluent family whose true wealth may be more than anyone could have imagined. His dreams of a peaceful life with his girlfriend (Lee Jung-yeon) are changed when someone "makes him an offer he can't refuse." ~ Wikipedia
To be honest, I have not watched this drama. I watched Chuno (The Slave Hunter), which was released before this drama but somehow skipped this one. The main reason was that I couldn't find a paid site where I could stream it legally. Yes, it is available on shady streaming sites with countless ads to click on, but I choose not to watch it there. This old drama was released way before Netflix, and other subscription streaming sites became popular. I hope to watch it someday because I read so many glowing reviews about it.
Jang Hyuk looks so young in this portrait and here is an interesting fact. If you are a fan of K-drama I am sure you are familiar with the handsome actor Hyun Bin. And you might have watched Secret Garden, the drama that propelled Hyun Bin's career to become an A-lister. Do you know that Hyun Bin wasn't the top choice to play the role of Kim Joo-won, the male lead in Secret Garden? That role was originally written with Jang Hyuk in mind, but he declined the role because of some issues with his management agency. He rejected Secret Garden but signed up to act in Midas.
Now I imagine that his career trajectory would be very different if he acted in Secret Garden. Secret Garden made Hyun Bin's a famous actor in South Korea. In one interview, Jang Hyuk mentioned he did not regret not undertaking that role and was glad that the role helped Hyun Bin improve his career.
❤️ The Portrait ❤️
The reference photo for this portrait is taken not from the drama but (I think) from an interview or magazine photoshoot from around the time the drama was released. I tried to find the correct source of this photo, but this is an old photo, so I couldn't find a valid referral link other than the one posted by a fan on Instagram.

And the final portrait 😘
He looks slightly different in my portrait, but I hope I have captured most of his likeness. I struggled a bit with the shape of light and shadows in the portrait. That is why it looks slightly off though the facial alignment is mostly accurate. However, that is the point of practicing, to become better at it as time goes by 😃.
What do you think of this portrait? Please leave your lovely comments below 😊
That's it for now. If you read this far, thank you. I appreciate it so much! Kindly give me a follow if you like my content. I mostly write about making art, life musing, and our mundane yet charming family life here in Klang Valley, Malaysia.
