The inspiration for this one came from a desire to refine my color skillz by using colors in ways that are new to me.
In hindsight, the reference I chose was probably not ideal because it was sorta dark and difficult to make out the details of the model's face. Considering this was a color exercise idk what I was thinking there - 😆 - but carry on.
The skin was the main area I applied this concept of using bright colors to shade. The rest of the painting was done in the way I normally do shading (clipping mask, blending mode Multiply using darker version of flat color) because Baby Steps.
Her eyebrows and mouth are vivid saturated pinks and purples that compliment the skin color. I used similar saturated colors to complete the shading on the face. Despite the "unnatural-ness" of the bright colors, it seems give her some nice depth and 💢'pop'💢.
I kept the process pretty basic since this was really intended a test for myself, rather than a portfolio trophy.
Each section is on its own layer: one layer for hair, one for skin, a layer for the clothes, and one for the background. I started in the basic way, with a sketch and lines. Then I made the flat colors, the shadows/lights to give a sense of form, and lastly a simple background.
Thanks for your support! I do my best to bring you enjoyable, consistent content. 🧡 Sometimes life butts in and tries slow us down, but we all have to keep going and doing our best - not only on Hive but in our broader lives too.
Thanks for reading! I appreciate you all. Until next time,
