Good morning everyone,
How are you this morning? I bring to you my recent drawing. It's a sketch I just made showing a lady looking sideways with a short Bob hairstyle. I'm trying to practice drawing on a black background so as to become more better at it as practice makes perfect.
If you're an artist and you want to try drawing on a black background, here are some quick tips you should note.
- Drawing on a black background is quite different from drawing on a white background. Its kind of opposite. The places you'll draw on a black background are the ones you won't on a white background and vice versa. Though this are mostly manipulated based on the drawing. It's some sort of negative version of white background.
- Use a good white pencil which allows you to manipulate around the drawing. Like me, I use charcoal white pencil and I'll recommend it as you can make a light white shading and a deep shading with it.
- For a start, if you'll be using white charcoal pencil, don't do cross hatching as it could make it too thick. Shade back and forth in one direction as seen in the process of the drawing below. Let the shading to be regular.
- If you'll be drawing animals with furs, use tiny light strokes and build it till the furs reach your satisfaction. Do not shade while drawing hair.
- Finally, practice more. I'm not that good at it yet but with more practice, I believe I will soon and so can you.
For the drawing, I used white charcoal pencil on black sketchbook.
