Aside from my sketchbook for film scenes, I also have a separate sketchbook for scenes from cartoons. I love cartoons (a lot of them from Cartoon Network lol) and they are a great source of learning if you're studying colors. :D
For color studies in sketchbooks, I use Liquitex basics acrylics and a matte fluid medium instead of water so there will be less warping of the paper. The sketchbook that I got is really nice because it has thick papers and also it's in landscape form.
My main goal for having this sketchpad is to practice mixing colors. There have been MANY times I wanted a particular color and I just couldn't mix them right. It could be the paints that I use, how I mix it, or just in general how it looks beside other colors.
Having to paint cartoons lets me focus on the form and colors compared to painting human figures or still life.
For this post, you're going to see scenes from Adventure Time. I really really love their colors. It's so magical and such an eye candy. Every scene is so pretty.
This first one is from the very first episode. I didn't draw Lady Rainicorn, Jake, and the Gumball Guardians because they're so tiny but I only focus on the colors anyway. The sunset is just so pretty and I was challenging myself how to paint those sunset rays on the purple trees.
The shadows under the trees also look so good and natural. Being able to paint them straight on gave me some knowledge on how to mix them so they don't look too light, too dark, or too desaturated.
This scene is from the same episode. I was analyzing how they made the scene look dark but still saturated. Also you can see the green liquid is almost glowing, and that is because the surrounding areas are dark. :D
This last one is from Season 1 episode 2 where they went to Lumpy Space. It's such a pretty kingdom as well and I really like the purples and pink shades.
That's what my sketchbook contains for now since I'm also painting other things. I'm planning on painting more Adventure Time and also Steven Universe too since I love those shows. XD
Having this sketchbook is also quite a journal for me so they are curated and won't look "ugly" or unfinished. I love painting the scenes I like from the shows I enjoy cos it's kinda like keeping screenshots of what you like but instead I am drawing and painting them myself... and I get to learn a lot of stuff too! For me it's the same as keeping a writing journal where you keep poems or quotes from authors you enjoy, except mine is visual. :D
So this sketchbook is kinda like my happy book and heals my inner child lol.
