Método Loomis / Loomis Method
Hola amigos / Hello friends
William Andrew Loomis was an American illustrator, writer and art instructor. He is famous for writing a series of instructional art books. His method was developed in the 1940s, which is based on geometry to locate the components of the face. His method was very successful and is still used by many artists today. Today I share with you the drawing of a human skull made with this method and the step by step of it. I hope you like it.
Aquí les muestro el proceso del dibujo:
Here I show you the drawing process:
Initially we draw a circle, which we divide with a central line.
We draw a horizontal line in the center and then divide each half into equal thirds. This method is also called the sphere and cross method.
Then we measure the distance of two thirds. To make the circle and the divisions, I use a proportion divider, which is a very useful and practical tool.
We project this measurement downward to define the three areas that make up the face
Here we can see these areas, which are the hairline, the eyebrow line and the nose line.
The next step is to draw some lines in this way forming a square inside the circle, this defines the width of the face.
Then we draw a small curve from the eyebrow line, this represents the eyebrow area. We draw a line in the middle of the space to locate the eye pits.
We go down to the area of the nose and divide it approximately in half and make a figure similar to a triangle. Up to this point all the strokes are of an abstract type, quite angular, since what we want is to correctly place the parts, then they are better developed giving rhythm to the figure.
We project lines approximately from the center of the eyeballs to define the width of the jaw.
The line projected downward will represent the chin and the line of our circle would be the line of the teeth.
This is how our sketch would look like, if we were making a face, the part of the circle that protrudes would be to place the ears, in our case, as it is a skull, we will not use it.
Starting from this sketch we can now detail our drawing
Final result
Nota:
The Loomis method is not a template, it is an ideal representation of the proportions, in practice these proportions vary, since all people are different, but its use helps us to locate the parts of the face correctly, then each artist would make the appropriate corrections in the measurements to make a correct representation.
