“Twilight Sapporo Susukino-Aumagadoki”
I finished sketching for my cut paper art which is called “Twilight Sapporo Susukino.” The Japanese title is “aumagadoki (逢魔時)” which means twilight, dusk, night fall and is traditionally regarded as a time when accidents and disasters are frequent.
In my home town of Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, there is a district called Susukino. Susukino is very famous for bars, night clubs, restaurants, taverns, discos, cafes, karaoke boxes, Internet cafes, saunas, spas, hotels, darts bars, and also, a red light district. There are many cool places to have fun but sometimes alcohol spirits make people blind.
I quit drinking a couple years ago so, I don’t go to bars anymore. I sometimes feel how much I was drawn to the alcohol ocean. After aumagadoki, people are called by the drinking areas. Once you drink the first drink, you become friends with the alcohol spirits. Aumagadoki energy secretly swallowed you. Phew… I am glad that I escaped from the spirits.
Aumagadoki is a scary moment but on the contrary, it is an attractive moment as well. I think I like this moment. People say “Tasogaredoki (黄昏時) as well. I think Aumagadoki sounds more spooky. I don't know why but I miss this moment. It could be my past life memories. Anyway, I will share the cut-paper version when I am finished.
“逢魔時 札幌すすきの”
切り絵用のスケッチを書きました。タイトルは“逢魔時 札幌すすきの”です。
北海道の札幌市市にはすすきのという地域があります。すすきのはバー、ナイトクラブ、レストラン、居酒屋、ディスコ、カフェ、カラオケ、インターネットカフェ、サウナ、スパ、ホテル、ダーツバーなど何でもある有名な場所で、さらに歓楽街としても有名です。たくさん楽しい場所がありますが、アルコールのスピリットに惑わされる場所でもあります。
数年前にお酒をやめたので、もうバーなどは行かなくなりました。今でも時々、どんなにアルコールの海で溺れていたのだろうかとふと思うことがあります。逢魔時が過ぎると、飲屋街から呼ばれる人々がいます。一杯目に口をつけた途端に、アルコールスピリットと友だちになります。逢魔時のエネルギーがあなたを飲み込みます。ふう…、あのスピリットから逃れられてよかったです。
逢魔時はとても怖い反面魅力的な瞬間でもあります。わたしは意外と好きな時間帯です。黄昏時ともいいますね。逢魔時はもっと怖い感じがします。わたしはなぜかこの時間帯が懐かしい気がするのです。たぶん前世の記憶なんだと思います。切り絵バージョンができたらまた投稿したいと思います。

This is my imagination future and past mixed image of Susukino’s main area in Sapporo city. I mixed real signs in this drawing. There are many interesting signs on the buildings such as Nikka whisky, karaoke, Internet cafes, and taverns. I imaginatively designed a zen bar, a sushi bar, a crescent bar, maneki neko, a hot spring, and ramen noodle signs.
I imaginatively drew an old licensed quarters house on the building. There were these kind of places in Susukino before in the olden days. I drew solar panels in front of the place.
I also imaginatively drew a shrine gate, pine trees, the moon, barber shop lights, a daruma, and a street car. This street car design is an old-looking design but this is a new electric version. This street car takes you to another world.
In another world, there is a vortex. The ghost hand and octopus arms invite you to another world. There is a cross walk which also takes you to another world and a police station called a Koban. Actually, there is a real police station near this area. Susukino Koban is the busiest police station in Sapporo I think. Sometimes TV documentaries film their reality.
これはすすきのエリアの未来と過去の融合したわたしのイメージです。ところどころに本当の看板などを描いています。ニッカウヰスキー、カラオケ、ネットカフェ、居酒屋などの看板があります。禅バー、寿司屋、三日月バー、招き猫、温泉、ラーメンの看板は想像で描きました。
想像でこのビルの上に遊郭を描きました。事実昔はすすきのにも遊郭があったそうです。この遊郭の前にはソーラーパネルを描きました。
さらに、想像で鳥居、松の木、月、床屋のライト、だるまと市電を描きました。この市電は古いデザインに見えますが電気市電です。この市電は別世界へとあなたを誘います。
別世界には渦巻きがありますね。お化けの手とタコの足があなたを別世界へと誘っています。横断歩道は別世界と交番につながっています。実際もこの一角の近くに交番があります。すすきの交番は札幌で最も忙しい交番なのではないでしょうか。時々ドキュメンタリー番組が撮影しています。
This is the real Susukino area in Sapporo city. I took this photo when I visited Japan last summer. I didn’t go there at night but even in the daytime, I felt alcohol. There are many cool bars, clubs, cafes, and restaurants though!
これは札幌市すすきのエリアの実際の写真です。去年の夏日本に行った時に撮りました。夜ではなく日中訪れましたのですが、お酒を感じました。たくさんかっこいいバー、クラブ、カフェ、レストランなどがあります！
I took this photo a long time ago. It's the same area as above. The night one looks very different!
