I decided to paint a cute brown dog in watercolor. I initiall ly thought I'd paint a glossy black dog but had to ask myself if I really wanted to mix a lot of dark ultramarine blues and brown to get the color I wanted. I realized I wasn't really in the mood for all that mixing and preferred something much brighter, so here is the final result of that thought process
I am also painting to be able to make a good assessment of the cansom paper I forgot to share in my last post so I can determine if I will keep buying it.
So far, the only real benefit has been in how absorbent it is. As for vibrancy, I'm yet to decide if I'm satisfied with how it looks compared to other water pads I've used. I've been layering with very desaturated colors so I don't know if that's part of it. That's why in my next painting I will layer with more vibrancy and less dilution in my first wash to test how it'll dry out.
Back to the painting at hand. I started with a sketch of the dog
Then I picked my colors in the art rangers collection. Mostly burnt sienna if you can recognize it by now and ultramarine blue with a bit of crimson red. I painted in one layer because I felt it was sufficient for the effect I was going for. With slight retouches at the head and arms just to create that fragmented look. One ear is also darker. I was considering painting the other to match up but decided to leave it like that. It's art anyway and I can drstructure when I want :)
Finishing touches just had me erasing some line and adding my name to it. Cheers!
