Picked up my soft pastels after nearly 3 years!
I love soft pastels. It's something about their dusty, vibrant pigments called me back, and I decided to start simple—a peach. Soft, warm, and delicate, it felt like the perfect subject to ease into making art again.
Some of my pastels were worn down, others slightly hardened with age, but they were still usable. I got them 6-8 years ago in Dubai. They are still around because I haven't drawn so much since coming home.
But the moment I blended the first stroke of warm orange onto the paper, I was reminded of why I loved pastels in the first place—their softness, the way they smudge and layer effortlessly.
I just recently learned I can put a fixative spray after building the foundation. I tried it with this drawing, but the paper does not hold the fixative (and pastels) properly. After all, I am just drawing on my planner since there's a lot of blank pages.
By the time I finished, I felt a sense of peace. I loved how my fingers looked after finishing my peach. It wasn’t perfect, but just like that, I knew I would be drawing again soon.
I uploaded a YouTube video drawing my peach.
You can check it here.
If you’ve ever stepped away from something you love, I encourage you to pick it up again.
See you around!
