Origin of the Myth
What are the origins of the legend of the Mermaids?
It is said that the first mermaids were far from being the fish-tailed mermaids as they are known today, although they were always connected to the Sea. "In Greek mythology, mermaids were hybrid creatures with the body of a bird and the face of a woman who lured sailors with their hypnotic songs, leading them to a fatal fate. Homer mentioned them for the first time in his famous Odyssey." 1
There is much speculation about them, since they were turned into half bird, half human as a punishment from the gods. However, mermaids have always sung their songs to attract sailors who, enraptured, succumbed to their charms.
Subsequently, the figure of the mermaid evolved over time to become the beautiful half-fish, half-human woman who attracts sailors with her hypnotic song.
"The earliest testimony showing mermaids with fish tails is found in the Liber Monstrorum, an Anglo-Latin manuscript dating from the late seventh or early eighth century." 2. In this manuscript, the mermaid was described as a being that moved through the depths of the sea thanks to its fish-tailed complexion despite having a feminine appearance down to the navel.
More about the Mermay challenge
This challenge was created by Tom Bancroft, illustrator creator of the dragon Mushu from the Disney movie Mulan and started in 2016. It consists of a list with themes to inspire artists and drawing enthusiasts to create a mermaid on a daily basis.
This kind of challenge is like fresh air for illustrators, as it helps us to develop creativity and keep us in constant drawing practice.
Inspired by this challenge, many artists, including myself, decided to create our own list of themes for the Mermay. It's been two years since we started the #mermaytropical challenge (representing the tropics and Venezuela for being a tropical country) in the company of the Jovenes Pintores drawing academy through the instagram social network.
You don't need to be an expert drawer or illustrator to participate in Mermay, you just need the desire, inspiration and love for drawing.
I invite you to join this lovely challenge and let your imagination fly by creating a mermaid or marine animal for each theme.
The artists will have free rein to create their own mermaids in the format they want and with the artistic technique they like the most.

Origen del Mito
Cuales son los orígenes sobre la leyenda de las Sirenas?
Se dice que las primeras sirenas distaban mucho de ser las sirenas con cola de pez como se les conoce actualmente, aunque siempre estuvieron conectadas con el Mar. "En la mitología griega, las sirenas eran criaturas híbridas con cuerpo de ave y rostro de mujer que atraían a los marineros con sus hipnóticos cantos, conduciéndolos a un destino fatal. Homero las mencionó por primera vez en su célebre Odisea". 1
De ellas se especula mucho, desde que fueron convertidas en mitad pájaro, mitad humana como un castigo de los dioses. Sin embargo, desde siempre las sirenas entonaban sus cantos para atraer a los marineros que embelesados sucumbian a sus encantos.
Posteriormente fue evolucionando la figura de la sirena con el paso del tiempo hasta convertirse en la hermosa mujer mitad pez mitad humana que atrae con su canto hipnótico a los marineros.
"El primer testimonio que muestra a las sirenas con cola de pez se halla en el Liber Monstrorum, un manuscrito anglo-latino que data de finales del siglo VII o principios del siglo VIII". 2. En este manuscrito se describía a la sirena como un ser que se movía por las profundidades del mar gracias a su complexión de cola de pez a pesar de tener una apariencia femenina hasta el ombligo.
Más sobre el reto Mermay
Este reto creado por Tom Bancroft, ilustrador creador del dragón Mushu de la película de Disney Mulán y comenzó en el año 2016. Consiste en una lista con temas para inspirar a artistas y entusiastas del dibujo a crear diariamente una sirena.
Este tipo de retos es como un aire fresco para los ilustradores, ya que nos ayuda a desarrollar la creatividad y mantenernos en la práctica constante del dibujo.
Inspirados por este reto, muchos artistas entre los que me uno, decidimos crear nuestra propia lista de temas para el Mermay. Ya son dos años desde que iniciamos el reto #mermaytropical (representando el trópico y Venezuela por ser un país tropical) en compañía de la academia de dibujo Jovenes Pintores por la red social de instagram.
No se necesita ser un experto dibujante o ilustrador para participar en Mermay, solo hacen falta las ganas, la inspiración y el amor por el dibujo.
Los invito a unirse a este encantador reto y dejar volar su imaginación creando una sirena o animal marino para cada temática.
Los dibujantes tendrán vía libre para crear a su gusto las sirenas en el formato que quieran y con la técnica artística que más les guste.
