Hello there peeps, it's my first art post here in the Sketchbook community. I think this community is better suited for the artwork I'm gonna post below. I'm really happy to join this community and the first thing I'm gonna post here is a Glow art that I did last day.
For this purpose, I have chosen Gojo Sataru, the main character of Jujistu kaisen anime. Since it's my first official art post here on Hive I thought the glow should come from the Hive logo itself.
The reference image can be found here.
Note: Increase brightness to see the glow well !
The process
STEP: 1
First of all, we need to make a rough sketch on paper as you see above. I made some minor changes to his face such as increasing the size of his eyes to make him look a bit younger. Another reason is that while doing glow it's easier to do it on a bigger eye.
STEP: 2
The next thing to do is to import the work into the digital painting software called 'Ibis x paint' where I do the glow among other stuff such as greyscale colouring. Then I draw clean lines using 'Dip pen hard' with pointed edges to get a nice and clean lineart.
Note : You can skip this step and go straight to drawing glow works with the image that you captured if your camera capabilities are good. For me, this is better because the canvas offers better quality than my camera.
STEP: 3
I chose his fingers as the source of light so I'm adding shadows and colour on his face as well as his clothes based on that direction of light. The area devoid of light should be made darker compared to the rest. You can get a better understanding while viewing the picture itself. The shading process is not complete yet because I add major shades and shadows after I make the glow. After all, it's easier to do it that way.
STEP: 4
The next step is to add a black layer above the lineart and shades layer at 43-50% opacity. The reason for this is that the glow is more visible in a darker environment.
STEP: 5
It's time to draw the Hive logo with the 'Polygon tool' on an 'add layer' above the previous ones. Once you made the logo fill it up with a light colour because the central source of strong light is always whitish. Use the 'eraser tool' and 'straight-line tool' together to make linear lines like on the hive logo. Once that's done I selected yellowish-orange colour as the glowing light. Use an 'Airbrush' and tap on the logo until you get a feel of the glow on another 'add layer' above it.
STEP: 6
It's time to start working on eye glow, reflection details on his glasses, face and hair. I used 'Dip pen soft' at various opacity for this purpose. I painted the eyes yellow and white using 'Dip pen hard' and added a glow there with an 'Airbrush' too. The next step is to make some darker shadows on the clothes as you see in the image.
I also added a hive logo reflection on his eyes. Remember the hive logo glow layer we made earlier? Just duplicate that layer and shrink it until it fits in his eyes. No need to redraw it again and this reflection detail will give it a more realistic feel.
STEP: 7
I added two small shining light ray reflections on the glass to make him look extra cool. You can actually stop right here if you want to. The further steps below are done to add some more creativity to what I made above but these extra steps will make every glow art unique.
STEP: 8
Alright then, let's make it extra special. Go ahead and select the 'Neon pen' and tap it around the Hive logo to get that sparkling effect. Adjust the size of the brush so that it gets a feel of depth. Now to do some reflection details on his clothes as well with 'Dip pen soft' like you see in the picture above. It's easy, right?
The next and final thing is to add highlights on his hair with 'Pen fade brush' at 10% opacity on an 'add layer' around the areas where the light falls. I'm also posting three different versions as my final finished version of the artwork just for fun.
If you made it this far thanks for reading guys. I hope you guys enjoyed my glow art process of Gojo and learnt something about glow or luminesce from this post. If this post motivates you to try something like this in the future then I'm happy.
