Hello to everyone in this community and all art lovers! Before taking a few days off to travel, I spent some time working on a couple of watercolor drawings. I should mention that I'm not an expert with this type of medium, so most of the time I just go with the flow and paint following my "instinct," not striving for perfection but rather focusing on creation through the enjoyment of the illustration process. The drawing I'm going to show you today is a lovely picnic filled with delicious desserts, where strawberries are the stars 🍓✨
Like many of us who enjoy drawing, I've been saving images and photos on my phone for "reference"—I say "reference" in quotes because it's become a running joke that we end up saving images and saving them, only to never use them. Well, I decided to get serious and actually start using them. I'd already organized some of these reference images, and among my favorites are the pretty pictures of food and desserts. I'm not a big eater, but I appreciate how aesthetically pleasing a well-arranged meal can look.
Before this drawing, I had done some with fewer objects, so I thought I'd take a chance and choose a photograph with more elements to draw. In fact, I had drawn the sketch in my notebook months ago, haha, but I finally decided to paint it instead of starting a new, simpler one (out of sheer laziness). The type of paper in the sketchbook isn't the most suitable for working with this kind of material, since it's not thick enough, but I use it because it has a certain porosity, as well as a yellowish color that I like, and as long as I'm careful, the watercolor turns out quite well, in my opinion.
I started by painting the lighter colors, like the surfaces of the plates, then moved on to the strawberries, adding some yellow for the highlights. I like using red because I feel it looks quite beautiful and vibrant. When it came to adding details to the plates, I didn't stress about recreating an identical pattern of flowers; on the contrary, I took the liberty of being more free-flowing because, as I mentioned, my goal isn't to end up hating watercolors by striving for perfection, haha. Later on, I will practice painting smaller figures and refining my strokes and such... but for now, I'm happy painting without being so rigid in the process.
When it came to shading, I used violet watercolor for the larger areas because I didn't want to use black, although I also think a blue tone would have worked. For the rest, I thought it best to use colored pencils, since I really like the combination of both materials. For the highlights, since I don't have an acrylic marker, I used acrylic paint applied with a brush. This also allowed me to define the "creamy" part of the dessert, because, as I mentioned before, the paper I drew on isn't white, but a yellowish tone, so the cream didn't look like cream at all, haha.
Finally, when I upload it to social media, I usually take a picture and brighten it up a bit by increasing the brightness setting in my favorite image editor (Line Camera). Where I usually work, I feel the lighting isn't the best, and things don't look as vibrant as they do in person. This method allows me to avoid dull photos and recover the colors I see in real life. I don't know about you, but drawing this gave me a huge craving for a dessert with lots of strawberries and cream 😋🍓

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes del dibujo! Antes de tomarme unos días libres y viajar, estuve dedicándole un ratito a un par de dibujos que realicé utilizando acuarelas. Quiero agregar que no soy experta utilizando éste tipo de material, así que la mayor parte del tiempo, me dejo llevar y pinto siguiendo mi "instinto", sin buscar la perfección sino más bien, la creación a través del disfrute del proceso de la ilustración. En el caso del dibujo que voy a mostrarles el día de hoy, se trata de un lindo picnic lleno de postres deliciosos, donde las fresas, son las protagonistas 🍓✨
Como muchos de los que nos gusta dibujar, he estado guardando en mi teléfono algunas imágenes y fotografías para usar de "referencia", lo digo entre comillas, porque ya se ha vuelto un chiste recurrente que al final, guardamos y guardamos imágenes, para nunca usarlas. Pues, pensé en ponerme seria y comenzar a realmente usarlas. Ya había organizado algunas de estas imágenes de referencias y entre mis favoritas, están las fotografías lindas sobre comidas y postres. No soy una comedora empedernida, pero me gusta lo estético que puede lucir una comida bien acomodada.
Anterior a éste dibujo, había realizado unos con menos objetos, así que pensé en arriesgarme y seleccionar una fotografía con más elementos para dibujar. De hecho, el boceto lo había dibujado en mi cuaderno hace meses jaja pero por fin me decidí a pintarlo, en lugar de iniciar uno nuevo y más sencillo (por mera flojera). El tipo de papel del block, no es el más adecuado para trabajar éste tipo de material, ya que no es lo suficientemente grueso, pero lo uso porque tiene cierta porosidad, así como un color amarillento que me gusta y mientras tenga cuidado, la acuarela queda bastante bien, a mi parecer.
Primero comencé pintando los colores más claros, como las superficies de los platos, después pasé a las fresas, colocando algo de amarillo para las luces. Me gusta utilizar el color rojo porque siento que luce bastante bonito e intenso. A la hora de elaborar los detalles en los platos, no me rompí la cabeza tratando de recrear un patrón idéntico de las flores, al contrario, me tomé la libertad de hacerlo más libre pues, como comenté, mi idea no es acabar odiando las acuarelas por ir en búsqueda de la perfección jaja más adelante, sí practicaré realizar figuras más pequeñas y refinar mis trazos y eso... pero por los momentos, soy feliz pintando sin ser tan rígida en el proceso.
En el momento de sombrear, para las zonas más grandes utilicé acuarela de color violeta porque no quería usar negro, aunque también opino que hubiese servido un tono azul. Para el resto, pensé que lo mejor era dejárselo a los crayones de madera, ya que me gusta mucho la mezcla de ambos materiales. En el caso de las luces, como no tengo un marcador de acrílico, utilicé pintura acrílica colocada con pincel. Esto me permitió definir también la parte "cremosa" del postre, porque como mencioné anteriormente, el papel sobre el cual hice el dibujo, no es blanco, sino de un tono amarillento, así que la crema, no lucía como tal jaja.
Finalmente, al momento de subirlo a las redes, suelo fotografiarlo y darle un poco más de luz aumentando la función de brillo de mi editor de imágenes preferido (Line camera). Donde suelo trabajar, siento que la iluminación no es la mejor y las cosas no lucen con los colores tan bien definidos como en persona, así que éste método me permite no conformarme con fotografías opacas y poder recuperar el color que puedo apreciar en vivo y en directo. No sé ustedes, pero dibujar esto me dio un antojo enorme de comer un postre con muchas fresas y crema 😋🍓
