Reaching a state of calm is not always easy. Life can throw things at you one after another and there is no way you can escape that. You just have to learn to cope with it better. And learn when to shift gears.
It is easy to lose sight of the things which really matter when you are being swept away by the agitated sea of existence. Unexperienced humans lose their ability to see beyond the storm. As we age, some of us become wiser and realise that a storm shall pass regardless of how much we stress about it.
As I was listening to one of Jim Rohn's speeches, I was so pleasantly surprised to hear something which got me thinking. Rohn said that the greatest legacy we leave behind is the way we treat the people from our lives. Read it again and let that sink in.
It is not the money, the status or the items the ones which matter. The way we behave with others tells more about ourselves than anything else. The way we talk about people when they are not around. I always noticed that I can observe people's nature better this way. If a person constantly talks badly about others, telling how they are bad, arrogant, mean, egocentric... I might be tempted to think they are actually projecting their own flaws onto others. And usually birds of a feather flock together. So there are little chances that a group of friends with bad character welcome an angel to join. I learned this lesson late in life and I can now understand that it is good to listen more and talk less. And be careful how people treat other people.... Most likely you will get the same... So do not smile in joy when they are cruel, mean, ironic and gossip with others. You will be next someday and you will not like it.
Leaving a legacy through your behaviour is really the only thing that matters. If you make a mission in working on yourself, on your character, and give good attitude to deserving friends, family, your children, your partner, then all of those good seeds will last through generations. But if you plant anger, lies, gossip, irony, greed, mockery.... You will not be happy with the result which you'll collect. What's the point in acquiring material things if your attitude makes you unhappy with yourself and others? Why pile up money when you are never satisfied with the amounts?
I can understand why Jim Rohn said what he said. And it is a brilliant way to lead your life by listening to this advice. Be the role model, be the way you would like others to be with you. You want love? Then give love. You want honesty, commitment, trust? Then you must learn to give before wanting to receive. We are born naked and we will die naked. But the way people's lives were influenced by us is indeed our immortal legacy on Earth.
