Making plans of how we'll use our time daily is a wise thing to do. So many of us do not plan our activities for each day that is why often times, the day runs out without us making any major achievement but funny enough, some of us will still complain of being so stressed and tired even if we've just been sitting in front of a TV all day.
But then again, laying out plans for each day is not just enough. There's a huge tendency of us derailing from our plans except we discipline ourselves to consciously follow them. So we do not just need to have a plan, we must work according to the plan and not let anything distract us from getting our plans carried out.
Effects of Poor Time Management
Our inability to manage our time effectively and efficiently can have various detrimental effects on us as individuals and even the organisations we work for. Some of these effects include:
- Poor quality of work.
- Inability to meet up with schedules.
- Poor working relationships.
- Joblessness, etc.
Also, effective time management comes with lots of advantages.
If we can manage our time wisely, we can equally manage our finances and resources. We can manage and develop any little thing that is entrusted in our care. This can help reduce stress, create opportunities for us, improve our careers and boost our confidence(s) too.
If you are one who is struggling with time management, below are some tips that can help you manage your time effectively.
Set goals correctly. Prioritize based on importance and urgency.
Set a time limit. Set a time limit to complete each tasks.
Take a break between tasks. Do not go on and on and work. Give yourself short breaks in-between so you don't overstress yourself.
Organise yourself. Take time to prepare properly before carrying out any task.
Remove non essential tasks/activities. Do not spend time doing something that does not bring any form of benefit to you. If it's not important, take it off the list.
Plan ahead. Always prepare for unforseen eventualities. Think at large of possible crises or any thing that isn't part of your plan but may likely happen.
If you diligently follow these few tips consistently, effective time management will become your new habit in no time.
Finally, remember Michael Altshuler a serial entrepreneur and motivational speaker from Atlantic City once said:
"The bad news is time flies.
The good news is you're the pilot!"
This means that though time moves speedily and waits for no one, you can manage your time and control what you use it for in order to attain productivity.
Do not also forget that your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow. So start investing your time only in the things that will matter most tomorrow.
