We were supposed to be on a flight to Tasmania yesterday for a week-long holiday. It didn't happen of course; The virus, and subsequent travel restrictions, put an end to the trip which has now been postponed until October. We're not happy about that, however understand the situation calls for drastic measures including locking down borders.
So, what does Faith and the G-dog do on a virus-affected Sunday instead of flying down to the amazing Aussie State of Tasmania? Hiking in the amazing Aussie State of South Australia of course!
Now, before you ask me where I am, don't; It's private property you see. Suffice it to say that it's in the Southern Flinders Ranges about three hours north of the capital city of Adelaide.
We'd left home early in the morning to take the trip and by early-mid-morning were hiking around the vast sheep-station with no one else around. Naturally, I had permission to be there from my mate, the owners son, and we caught up for a socially-distanced cup of coffee and some pumpkin scones before we began hiking.
Some of you may recall a previous post I did on steem some time ago about some off-roading I did in my 4x4 at this same property - My mate's mum makes the best pumpkin scones!
Above you can see Faith, my wife and better half, in the morning not long after we set out. The other two images are from the property. See the peak in the distance of the right image? That's where we hiked to.
Faith and I do a lot of hiking in the Australian ourback; It goes together with our love of camping and off-roading. I also hunt a lot so tend to spend a lot of time in the scrub and outback areas of this big-old land of ours. We both love it, and the more remote, the better. Remote translates to less-populated as it's people we are ever-keen to avoid, for obvious reasons.
We spent several hours hiking, stopping also for a back-pack lunch of canned tuna, crackers, dried apricots, cashew nuts and a fresh-baked pumpkin scone each, courtesy of my mates mum.
Over lunch Faith and I chatted a little about contingency plans around potential financial setbacks due to the virus situation; We could both lose our incomes depending on how it plays out.
Fortunately we have positioned ourselves reasonably well and have flexibility through the ability to dispose of certain things to supplement us in the advent of incomes drying up. Not that we want to get rid of those things, just that we can if we needed to.
It made me wonder if anyone else is thinking ahead to that potential situation or if they're still just trying to work out where their next roll of toilet paper is going to come from. I'd be interested to know if people are being proactive about it or prefer to wait for handouts...That may not come.
We hiked up to the summit and back arriving back at my truck around three in the afternoon and after a quick three hours on the blacktop, and some tunes, we were home in the early evening.
Many people wouldn't do a 550 kilometre round-trip to see a mate, take a hike and eat some scones, but for me it's legit, and time well-spent...You see, I hold to the belief that life is far too unpredictable to leave until tomorrow what could be done today, especially when it is such an enjoyable thing - Like our day-trip yesterday was.
If you've ever laid on the bank of a little creek with your partner, away from prying eyes, the noise and aggravation of society and blue skies overhead then you'll know what I mean...If you have not...Well, you should try it.
I've begun my working week with renewed vigour and energy, and whilst I'd rather be laying beside that creek with Faith, or in Tasmania, I'm content to work towards he next weekend...The working week in between the last weekend and next will make me enjoy it all the more when it comes around.
I hope y'all have had a good weekend a great week ahead despite all the negativity and bad news out there, and yeah...Hopefully you are planning ahead for things to come...Comment below if you are, and if you feel inclined to share.
