Hey all, every year I go to the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY to carve for their Earth Day event. They have a handful of trees that are coming down due to disease or for being at risk of falling.
I carved this buffalo at last years event.
This was a massive hard maple tree 5ft in diameter.
At the end of my first cut I hit something hard, very hard.
Yeah, apparently they used to stuff the holes in the trees with concrete to keep animals from building homes....😕 It always happens on the first cut and with a new chain for some reason.
Took me all day to get to that concrete. And the design had to be altered because of this. Had to step back, walk away to collect my thoughts. It was definitely a frustrating moment.
Walked around a bit and got some photos of the cemetery. Its beautiful in the spring and they have some amazing headstones.
Theres a few famous people buried there.
Ok back at it the next day and made some good progress throughout the day.
On the final day I removed the rest of the wood and got it ready for the finish.
They didnt want it painted fully, just a bit of color with the torch. Easy enough.
Just for fun..
This year they have planned for me to carve 2 turkeys in flight. Will be an epic piece for sure and I will definitely share with you all.
I hope you enjoy seeing what I saw, if so feel free to upvote and resteem. I love what I do and I'm happy to share.
Thanks for looking
