Who would have thought that playing a game would give me the perspective I needed when I am stuck?
I know that there are people out there battling game addiction. But here I am, playing game and trying to find inspiration while I am stuck. I originally wrote my thoughts on twitter about a game I started playing last week. It's one of the game that I really liked recently. It's called " Dead Maze" by Atelier 801. It's a survival 2D MMO game where you have to craft, scavenge and fight zombies. I know I should be doing my thesis but this game was irresistible in many ways since I've not played any games in a while.
There are more than 10 things I learned but these are the highlight that helped me get back on the track. Approaching life as if I am approaching the way I play games.
So, here's the thing I learned from playing Dead Maze
(1) I actually love solving problems and challenges. I failed several times finishing the objectives but I didn't quit. I need that kind of perseverance now more than ever.
(2) I have ambitions. I want to finish all the blueprints and unlock secret passages. That's the kind of ambition I need in life right now. it may translates differently but it'd be fun unlocking secret passages with rare loots, metaphorically speaking.
(3) I realized focus is my weakness. I should have focus on one building yet I try to build all at once. So, yeah, one thing at a time. It's faster and far more efficient.
(4) I love leveling up. No matter what it takes, I'll get the job done. That's the kind of attitude I should have right now.
(5) I'll always try to achieve my goals even with little privilege I have a.k.a the fraise or money in that game. I know it takes a long time and patience But that'll pay off. That's something I have while playing that game that I needed to implement in my life.
(6) Some missions requires a strategy and/or taking risks. This is the attitude I need. Know when to take risk or when to think then act.
(7) I wasn't shy to make allies. Allies are helpful. It's why I need to work on my social skills. Stop being shy.
(8) There's no overweight character in that game. Everyone is fit. But that makes sense cause the character eat when they have to and drink when they have to, not all the time. They also have a healthy lifestyle, rest when needed and stay active, cause the character has to run or walk a lot. What's interesting is that how food choices affect the energy. Some healthy foods are obviously raw food such as vegetables, meat and fruits.
(9) Some players have privileges such as money. Sure you can buy nice items with money. Or you can just wait until you finish off a task or find money. But really, there's always a way to unlock privileges.
(10) Don't compare yourself to other players. Sure there are many players who have reached lvl 1000 and have fancy outfit. But for someone who's just starting, that's normal to be in a phase of figuring out and learning. There are many players with lvl 1000 and also lvl 4. Stay consistent with making progress and eventually you'll level up. That's a hella attitude that I needed and we all need.
I know there are those who spent 7 hours playing and completed all the challenges but well, I wasn't focused solely on it. I also focus on building and find rare loots.
Last but not least, I have been trying to "game" my life but it never works. There are some factors that contributes to it. But through this game, I learned to approach my life in a way I approached playing game.
There are several things that caused me to fail when gamifying my life such as :
(1) I am aware that I am the master of the game. So it's why I think I can cheat my way to the game.
(2) It's cause the prize I set for myself are not rewarding enough. Actually prize itself shouldn't be determined by me. It's cause and result. Think about if you do something you'll get an x and it's not always money. It can be XP (experience) or items or just satisfaction.
(3) I give a flip what other people think. When I play a game, I didn't care others opinion or how they view me. Well, I need this attitude again. give 0 flip and stay on track. Eyes on the prize.
Anyway, that's some reflections I had that helps me get a fresh perspective while I am stuck. Now, I wonder is anyone "gamifying" their life to get the job done?I would like to hear your experience.
If you want to play that game head to official Dead Maze page. I am pretty sure you'll have fun and perhaps resonate with what I learned while playing that game. signing out
