Safety is important wherever we go. That's why it's important to know about what we are going to do in times of emergency. If we don't know what to do in times of disaster we will be rattled or panic. Our mind will keep on saying "what to do." That's why as a seafarer in the future like me. We must undergo more training as the requirements for riding a ship. It's being required in the International Maritime Organisation. If a seafarer didn't take this course he will not be allowed to onboard the ship. It's a hassle but it's only for our benefits.
Always remember that the safest place in the middle of the sea is the ship. These training practices are only applicable just in case something happens. As a person who took training, I will tell you the basics materials for safety at sea.
- Lifejacket - it will help you to float for 48 hours in the sea.
- Immersion suit - it will help you to overcome coldness.
- Lifeboat or liferaft - to avoid being in the sea that will cause hypothermia disease and foods on it.
In the first image above that was an immersion suit and at the back of that person was a life jacket. I think you're already familiar with life jacket since we saw it on movies. Unlike the immersion suit that it's not always be seen. But remember that having these two suits will have no assurance that you'll be safe in the sea. We are just hoping that you will not get sick and drowned into the sea. That's why the ship is the safest place in the middle of the sea.
This is a liferaft that contains foods, water, medicines and emergency paraphernalia. We never know how long we will float in the sea. That's why the materials we need to survive in that liferaft or lifeboat will last for 1 month only. Being in a liferaft or lifeboat is safer compared to wear a lifejacket and immersion suit. Make sure to follow what the crewmen said during abandoning the ship. Always remember that all of the personnel who will be in the ship gave the chance to ride on a lifeboat or liferaft. Also, there will always be a lifejacket and immersion suit to wear for all. No need to panic and just follow the instructions.
Tips on abandoning the ship:
- When the alarm makes a sound don't panic and don't go in random places.
- Follow the authorities because they're trained what to do in a time like this.
- You must listen when the authorities teach you how the proper way of wearing a lifejacket.
- Not to forget of bringing extra water even though there is water stored in a liferaft. Water is the most important tool in surviving.
That's the basic steps you need to follow so that you will not be left behind in abandoning the ship.
