Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!
On my way home back from the Azores about a month ago, I had a long 18-hour stopover in Lisbon so I decided to take advantage of that and explore the city a bit. I compiled a little photo collection of the shots that I took there and I am going to present you with it in my today´s post. But let me start out with a few interesting facts about Lisbon ;)
Home to more than 500,000 people, Lisbon is the largest and capital city of Portugal. Located on the Atlantic coast, it´s the westernmost capital city in Europe. Continuously inhabited since at least 1200 BC, Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and the second oldest capital in Europe (after Athens). Boasting a number of remarkable architectural landmarks dating back to centuries and even millennia ago, it is also one of the most visited cities in Europe, receiving almost 5 million of visitors every year.
Now that we are familiar with some background of this beautiful historic city, let me take you on a little tour around its picturesque streets.
Just like New York City has its iconic yellow cabs, Lisbon has its yellow trams. Just as iconic and probably even more photogenic ;)
When wandering through the city center, I was really surprised by how hilly the terrain actually is. No wonder that the locals built these outdoor escalators here.
But hills usually come with the benefit of some nice views and Lisbon is famous for many top notch lookout spots where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas. I got to visit these.
During my travels around the world, I have seen many places (usually squares) with abundant pigeon populations but in some parts of Lisbon, the birds seem to have taken over entire streets and neighborhoods :D
The architecture in the center of Lisbon is really spectacular. It only adds to the very special vibe of the city.
I noticed that one of the peculiarities of local streets is how narrow some of them actually are.
I read that Lisbon has a very lively street art scene but I came across just one piece during my very brief tour. However, it was a beautiful one.
A few more random shots from the city center. This is one of the churches located in the vicinity of the iconic Sao Jorge Castle.
This should be one of the main gates of the castle. The Sao Jorge Castle is really huge and majestic but it´s impossible to capture it when you are right at the foot of it.
The magnificent building of the National Theater.
The Column of Pedro IV, a famous monument dedicated to the prominent Portuguese king situated on the Rossio Square.
The equestrian statue of King John I, another important historic figure of the country.
Lisbon is also home to many beautiful parks and green areas. This one is called Alameda. Wherever there is a little piece of land with grass, you will see kids playing football (soccer) there, hoping to become new Ronaldos. No doubts football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in the country :)
Let me wrap this post up with an amazing aerial view of Lisbon that I captured from the plane. You can see why it is sometimes referred to as the City of Red Roofs :)
I hope you enjoyed this special photo collection dedicated to the beauty of Lisbon. I really wish I had more time to explore the city as I am sure one can spend a couple of days or even weeks hanging around without being bored. I hope I will have another chance to meet you, Lisbon.
Até logo, Lisboa!
