Like almost all São Miguel lagoons in the Azores, Lagoa das Sete Cidades is located in one of the volcanic craters that formed this island. It's in the parish with the same name Sete Cidades.
Lagoa das Sete Cidades is a freshwater lake and the largest in the Azores, occupying an area of approximately 4.3 km and with a depth of about 33 meters. It's one of the main tourist spots in the archipelago, which is why it receives many visits throughout the year.
The Green Lagoon, we are told, is because it has more and more vegetation around it. However, associated with Lagoa das Sete Cidades was always the legend of the Princess of Blue Eyes.
This locall was formed in the crater of a volcano. The lagoon is one, but due to its two different colors, they were named Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul, both come together and form one of the most incredible landscapes on the island.
The parish Sete Cidades belongs to the municipality of Ponte Delgada, in S. Miguel island. It's a small town, with about 800 habitants, and is located inside the Sete Cidades volcano, next to the lagoon with the same name.
