I've been following the ongoing situation in Russia & Ukraine. since I'm making YouTube shorts about modern warfare and current conflicts, and I wanted to share my understanding of what led to Russia's invasion to Ukraine. This is a simple topic that I understand based on my own understanding and research.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine started in 2022. There are several key factors that built up over time and make sense of this tragic situation.
- The NATO Factor
One of the biggest concerns for Russia was Ukraine's potential membership in NATO and the European Union. From Putin's perspective, having a NATO member right on Russia's border represented a direct threat to Russian security and influence in the region. Russia has historically viewed NATO expansion.
2. Control Over Ukraine:
Russia views Ukraine as part of its past empire. Putin wanted to stop Ukraine from becoming a strong, independent country friendly to the West.
Think of it like this: imagine if a rival group was setting up bases in your neighborhood, getting closer and closer to your home. That's how Russia viewed NATO's expansion.
3. Taking Crimea and Donbas:
In 2014, after Ukraine’s pro-Russian president was removed, Russia took over Crimea. At the same time, Russian-backed fighters started a war in eastern Ukraine (Donbas). Russia supported them but denied it. Later, Putin used the excuse of protecting Russian-speaking people in these areas to justify a full invasion in 2022.

Geopolitical Power: Putin’s Ambition: Some believe Putin wants to rebuild a Russian empire. Russia wants to maintain its influence over former Soviet territories and prevent them from joining Western alliances. Some analysts believe Putin has broader goals of rebuilding Russian influence,
that were once part of the Russian Empire or Soviet Union.
Economic Interests: Ukraine is rich in agricultural land, minerals, and has strategic ports. Control over these resources would benefit Russia economically.
