Of all the days to be late, today wasn't one Jen wanted to be late. The blaring horns from other drivers agitated her even more. This was one of the reasons she always wanted to get home early. Noise from rush hours like this always gave her headaches. She couldn't afford to be down with headache now because she had bible studies.
She planned to get home early, take a shower and relax to have a clear head before heading for Bible studies. She was the facilitator for today. But she just had to have a client walk in about 30 minutes to closing time. The client walked in with her 2 kids to get some Christmas dresses for them. It took a while for her to sort them out. By then, it was already past 5. And bible studies begins at 6:30pm. When she got on the road at Shiashie, it was 5:30pm.
She got home and leapt out of the car for the house. She almost tripped on Rocky, her dog, as she entered her house. He seemed to be uncomfortable and looked sick. "Not today", she exclaimed as she carried the dog and headed for the veterinarian in the next community.
The veterinary clinic was about closing when she got there but she begged the doctor to take a look at her dog.
"Don't know what's wrong with him but he seems to be choking on something. Can I leave him with you because I need to get home and change for church. Will come over to your house for him"
The doctor agreed as they'd known each other since high school. Upon reaching her driveway, Jen received a call from the doctor.
"The universe just wants me to be late to church of all places" she whispers to herself. "Hello doc, I just got to the house."
"Don't go in, stay away from the house. I'm on my way with the police". With these words from the doctor, the phone went dead. Scared, she parked at the other side of the street with the house in sight.
Soon after, the doctor and 2 policemen arrived at her house.
"Hope you didn't go inside. I was able get what was stuck in Rocky's throat. They were human fingers."
Jen looked horrified. "But how?!", She exclaimed.
Just then, the 2 policemen emerged from her house carrying what seemed like a man with blood all over him.
"I think that's a robber", said the doctor. "After pulling the human fingers from Rocky's place, I thought the police should check your property out before you entered".
"If I had left work early, I could have bumped into him in the house, who knows what would have happened?", Jen wondered.
