I don't know why I bother sometimes.
I have been a bit ill of late and thought a good night's sleep would do me some good. 1130pm.
Perhaps it would, but instead the dog woke me up to be taken out, something that happens a couple of times a year, and before I could, he peed on the floor. 4am.
Back in bed and falling asleep again and then my daughter woke me up to pee. At least she didn't go on the floor. 5am.
But, being close to morning she didn't rally want to go back to bed, so I am sitting Jere with her as she tries to sleep as it is far too late for me. 6am.
Well, perhaps next weekend I will get some sleep, as thus week I have far too much on my plate to get through.
My wife and I almost gave up completely on trying to get a loan for the renovation work required on our potential new, old home, but after a call on Saturday, there is a chance we may still secure one.
I am in two minds about taking on more debt as obviously, debt sucks ass. However so does the prospect of a 10-year renovation. We are prepared for one though, as even though we may secure a loan, we aren't getting our hopes up that it will happen. I have a feeling the loans manager made a mistake with her proposal.
The loan we need isn't massive, but at the same time, renovation work is significant enough to require chunks of cash in very short periods. For example, to get the oil heating changed over to a ground heat exchange system is around 20,000 euros, and while it doesn't take long to drill and install, it does require upfront payment.
The house currently uses between 3-4000 litres of oil a year which has significant costs and of course environmental impacts. Moving to a heat exchanger will have an ROI of about 8 years and use significantly less energy. It also is one of the easiest ways to increase house value. This is Finland, heating is a must.
Getting the loan would allow us to take care of the several large work items that require tradespeople, and then give us the space to do our own work. Because it will take us time to renovate things like surfaces anyway, it would be fine to have small monthly cash injections from what we can save.
My wife and I are looking around the Internet for inspiration as the house offers quite an opportunity to blend styles. We are thinking that even though a 60s house, the bathroom and kitchen can be modern with very clean lines and materials, while the rest of the house can have a more eclectic range to add warmth. Still, I don't mind the staples of black, white and grey.
Damn I am tired.
It is going to be a long day.
Luckily, I don't have any customer meetings today as far as I know, so I might be able to get away with staring at my screens thoughtlessly. That is similar to sleeping I guess.
Obviously, the house is taking up a lot of my thoughts at the moment as it is not only a big financial investment, but also is going to require a lot of effort on our part to get it done. While some people think renovating a house is picking tiles and wallpaper, we are going to have to get into it physically in order to keep our costs down.
This will be the third renovation I have done, and by far the largest. While looking forward to most of it, my hands still remember the last round and I don't think they are happy about the prospect.
Well, time to "wake up" and get my daughter ready for daycare and the dog outside - who is currently happily sleeping in his bed with an empty bladder. I will get to comments a bit later in the day.
