"Agriculture is our wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute most to real wealth, good morals & happiness." -Thomas Jefferson
Have you ever considered the advantages and the pleasure that come from being a farmer?
Let's now discuss how fortunate we are to be farmers.
- A farmer has access to even more, better, and fresher food than the majority of urban dwellers.
- Farmers tend to be healthy and rarely get sick. They are less prone to hypertension or obesity, which makes them live longer than the average non-farmers.
- Farmers enjoy and take pleasure in their work more than non-farmers. A farmer's primary responsibility is to provide food and food products for people. You feel more fulfilled when you know you are doing important tasks in the lives of others. You can consider farming as your “job”, “career”, “hobby” and/or “vocation”. You get everything from being a farmer; your income, passion, pleasure, calling, etc. Nobody can take it from you or give it to you. It is a choice.
- Farming teaches responsibilities, hard work, tolerance and patience. “Life on a farm is a school of patience and responsibilities, you can not hurry the crops or make an ox in two days.” -Henri Alain.
- Farming can be a form of exercise. Farming activities such as watering, weeding, fertiliser application, feeding of the animals, etc. offer farmers the opportunity to exercise themselves.
- Farming gives fresh air.
- Farming gives the opportunity to learn and try out new things. “To be a farmer is to be a student forever, for each day brings something new” -John Connell.
- Farming reduces stress. Farmers find it hard to stay idle because there’s always work to do in the farm. They constantly engage themselves to in reading about plants and the behaviour of farm animals, which helps to lower mental and emotional stress.
- Another benefit of farming is self-satisfaction. There is joy and satisfaction in seeing one’s plant or livestock growing and producing results.
- Let’s not forget that it also provides income. “A farmer is always going to the rich next year” - Philemon
- Farming helps protect the environment. Farming activities can preserve and restore critical habitat, enhance soil health and improve water quality. Farmers care more about the environment by wanting to protect and take care of the earth. They help people have access to high quality, nutritious food. Additionally, farmers provide a lot to society which includes but is not limited to:
- Production and provision of food to the society.
- Create job opportunities.
- Contribute to national development.
- Provision of Raw material.
- Helps in foreign exchange.
- Provision of herbs and Drugs.
- Contribute to national development
“Agriculture was the first occupation of man, and as it embraces the whole earth, it is the foundation of all other industries.” – Edward W. Stewart
