Today I want to tell you about one of my many experiences in this new country, in which I am living and getting to know. Who would have imagined that I, an educator by profession, would work in Alifrut and with asparagus? Lol.
Pues, les comento soy de comer pocas verduras y vegetales y en mi ciudad Maracaibo, lo que menos se puede comer, o te enseñan a comer son los espárragos.
Well, I tell you, I eat a few vegetables, and in my city, Maracaibo, the least you can eat or they teach you how to eat, are asparagus.
Llegó el invierno en Chile y con el, la cosecha de espárragos. Y con todo el frío que podía soportar, (ya que soy de la Tierra del sol amada) decidí ir a Alifrut una empresa de Alimentos y Frutos, donde estaban recibiendo currículum y haciendo entrevista,y como mi amiga y compañera de viaje Yalith también estaba desempleada, le dije y nos fuimos juntas. Luego de varias horas de espera, nos llamaron para darnos la noticia que comenzaríamos a trabajar al día siguiente.
Winter came in Chile and with it, the asparagus harvest. And with all the cold I could bear, (since I'm from the beloved Land of the Sun) I decided to go to Alifrut a Food and Fruit Company, where they were receiving CVs and doing some interview, and as my friend traveling companion Yalith was also Unemployed, I told her we would go together. After several hours of waiting, they called us to give us the news to start working the next day.
Llegamos al Área llamada Corte y Calibre, nos dieron las instrucciones, el debido uniforme y todas las medidas de seguridad e higiene para comenzar a laborar, fue muy emocionante para mí, una nueva experiencia con tantas cosas por aprender y para dar, aunque no estaba permitido tomar fotografías.
We arrived at the area called Corte y Caliber, they gave us the instructions, the proper uniform and all the safety and hygiene measures to start working, it was very exciting for me, a new experience with so many things to learn and to give, even though taking pictures was not allowed.
Tuvimos que usar mucha ropa, tener el cabello recogido, sin esmalte de uñas, ¡además de uñas súper cortas! Sin maquillaje, y lo peor de todo, haciendo turnos nocturnos durante toda una semana.
We had to wear a lot of clothes, have our hair tied up, no nail polish, plus super-short nails! Without makeup, and worst of all, doing night shifts for a whole week.
Allí había que tomar el espárrago, acomodarlo en la máquina para que ésta lo seleccione, limpie y distribuya en cada puesto, donde cada trabajador debía seleccionarlo y ubicarlo en cada bandeja, para su posterior congelado y envasado (esa es otra etapa de trabajo llamado CONGELADOS)
There it was necessary to take the asparagus, arrange it in the machine so that it can select it, clean it and distribute it in each position, where each worker had to select it and place it in each tray, for its subsequent freezing and packaging (that is another stage of work called FROZEN )
Aquí hay una anécdota: como no sabía nada sobre los espárragos, comencé a estudiar sus propiedades y beneficios y descubrí que no había tipos de espárragos, sino que los nombres que daban los espárragos eran los apellidos de los clientes que sería distribuido, jajaja. Pensé que eran Saveur, Top Ten, Surmont, espárragos Davigel, jajaja. Aprendí rápidamente el proceso y me colocaron como Jefe de Guía en las líneas 3 y 4.
Here is an anecdote: Since I didn't know anything about asparagus, I began to study its properties and benefits and discovered that there were no types of asparagus, but rather, the names that gave the asparagus were the last names of the clients which would be distributed, lol. I thought they were Saveur, Top Ten, Surmont, Davigel asparagus, lol. I quickly learned the process and they placed me as Head of Guide on lines 3 and 4.
Luego me enviaron al área de Congelados, allí era peor la vestimenta, parecía un robot jajaja... pero hice buenas amistades.
Then they sent me to the Frozen area, there the clothing was worse, it looked like a robot, lol... but I made good friends.
Aprendí muchas cosas,desde la selección hasta el envasado y etiquetado del producto; prácticamente todo el proceso para llevar a un feliz término la entrega de un producto de calidad a países extranjeros como China.
Al terminar la cosecha fui despedida,y ¿adivinen que? Ahora estoy trabajando en una heladería, esa historia será para otra publicación.
I learned a lot of things, from selection to packaging and product labeling; practically the entire process to bring to a successful conclusion the delivery of a quality product to foreign countries such as China. At the end of the harvest I was fired, and guess what? Now I am working in an ice cream parlor, that story will be for another publication.
