About four weeks ago, I suddenly became deaf. I stopped hearing in my right ear, but I thought it was just the flu. I never realized how serious the situation was until my husband was standing on my right side, spoke to me and I couldn't hear what he was saying.
Hace cuatro semanas, aproximadamente, se me produjo una sordera repentina. Dejé de escuchar por el oído derecho, pero pensé que era un simple malestar de gripe. Nunca imaginé lo grave de la situación hasta que mi esposo estaba parado a mi lado derecho, me habló y no pude escuchar lo que decía.
The body warns us, in different ways, when something is wrong with our organism. It sends us signals to take action. And it is better to listen to it, because the consequences of leaving it for later can be irreversible and catastrophic.

Last Saturday 1st, I started to feel a discomfort in the inner part of my right ear. It was as if I had a small inflammation, so I associated it with a common cold and took an anti-flu and an ibuprofen.
El sábado, 01 de octubre, empecé a sentir un malestar en la parte interna del oído derecho. Era como si tuviera una pequeña inflamación, por lo tanto lo asocié con un resfriado común y me tomé un antigripal y un ibuprofeno.
On Sunday 2nd, mid-morning my ear felt as if water had come in. Previously, I told you that I thought it was a simple flu, so I took another anti-flu and its respective ibuprofen. But, after a few hours there was no improvement, on the contrary, I suddenly started to feel a very annoying buzzing in that ear and when I touched the whole area, it was as if it was anesthetized.
El domingo 02, a media mañana sentía el oído como si me hubiese entrado agua. Anteriormente, les dije que pensé que era una simple gripe, así que me tomé otro antigripal acompañado de su respectivo ibuprofeno. Pero, pasadas las horas no hubo ninguna mejoría, por el contario, de repente empecé a sentir un zumbido muy molesto en ese oído y al tocarme toda esa zona, era como si estuviera anestesiada.
I did not want to say anything to my husband, because I thought it was something unimportant. However, in the evening of that same day, I realized that it was difficult for me to hear him and there was a brief moment when he was standing on my right side, he spoke to me and I could not hear anything he was saying. At that moment, I became aware that I was losing the hearing in my right ear. In fact, to make sure it was not my ideas, I covered my left ear with my hand and asked Fernando, my husband, to speak to me, and indeed I could not hear him. I told him, "Darling, I'm going deaf, I can't hear anything out of my left ear!" I still remember his surprised and frightened face at the same time.

Le dije: “¡Amor, me estoy quedando sorda! ¡No puedo escuchar nada por el oído izquierdo!” Aún recuerdo su cara de sorprendido y asustado al mismo tiempo.
On Monday 3rd in the morning, without much thought, we called the Centro Diagnóstico Otorrino to schedule an appointment, and thank God we were able to get an appointment for that same day at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
Sin pensarlo mucho, el lunes 03 temprano en la mañana, llamamos al Centro Diagnóstico Otorrino para agendar una cita, y gracias a Dios pudimos conseguir cita para ese mismo día a las 4 de la tarde.
Despite my hearing problem and the fact that I was not feeling well, I decided to go out to run some errands I had planned for that Monday. However, it was not a good idea, because when I heard high-pitched noises, for example a child screaming in a large room, my hearing felt like when you are trying to tune a radio and there is a lot of interference. Despite the insufferable situation, I tried to remain calm at all times and managed to keep my commitments.
A pesar de mi problema de audición y que no me sentía del todo bien, decidí salir a hacer unas diligencias que tenía planificada para ese lunes. Sin embargo, no fue una buena idea, debido a que cuando escuchaba ruidos muy agudos, por ejemplo el grito de un niño en una sala grande, mi oído se sentía como cuando estas tratando de sintonizar una radio y hay mucha interferencia. A pesar de lo insufrible de la situación, traté de mantener la calma en todo momento y logré cumplir con mis compromisos.
At 4 o'clock in the afternoon I was for the medical consultation with Dr. Sonia Ogalde. When she checked my ear she told me that my ear canal was intact, that the problem was internal and that I had to undergo emergency tests, an audiometry and an impedanciometry. In plain and simple words, the first test is to indicate whether a person hears well or not and the second one is to study the reaction of the middle ear to sound stimuli. These tests were performed by technologist Yorma Yobanolo in a soundproof booth.
A las 4 de la tarde estaba puntual en la consulta médica con la Dra. Sonia Ogalde. Cuando me revisó el oído me dijo que tenía el conducto del oído en cuestión intacto, que el problema era interno y que había que hacerme unos exámenes de emergencia, una audiometría y una impedanciometría. En palabras llanas y sencillas, el primer examen es para indicar si una persona escucha bien o no y el segundo, para estudiar la reacción del oído medio ante estímulos sonoros. Estos exámenes me los hizo la tecnóloga, Yorma Yobanolo en una cabina insonorizada.
The test results displayed that I had a severe hearing loss. That is, a threshold greater than 80 db (decibels).

I asked the doctor what was the reason for my deafness and if it was related to stress. She replied that there are many causes, but there was no specific one. Therefore, she did not want to associate my condition with stress, because if that were the main cause, we would all be deaf. Good point! Don't you think?
Le pregunté a la doctora cuál era el motivo de mi sordera. Qué si se debía al estrés. Me respondió que existen muchas causas, pero que no había una en específica. Por consiguiente, no quiso asociar mi condición con el estrés, porque si fuera esa la causa principal todos estaríamos sordos. ¡Buen, punto! ¿No les parece?
On the contrary, I have a brother who is an otorhinolaryngologist who lives in another city and he told me that this condition was caused by stress. Different opinions!

Back to the subject, the doctor prescribed me a quite aggressive treatment, because mine was an emergency case. She also told me that if I had not gone to the doctor in time, I would have completely lost the hearing in my ear.
Volviendo al tema, la doctora me recetó un tratamiento bastante agresivo, porque lo mío era un caso de emergencia. También, me comentó que si no hubiese ido a tiempo a la consulta médica, hubiese perdido completamente la audición del oído.
After 7 days of treatment, I returned to the doctor's office for the corresponding check-up, but this time only the audiometry test was performed and the result showed a significant improvement. Consequently, the doctor lowered the dosage of the treatment and this time I had to comply with it for 11 more days.
Pasado los 7 días del tratamiento, regresé a la consulta para hacerme la revisión correspondiente, pero esta vez me hicieron solo el examen de audiometría y el resultado mostró una mejoría importante. En consecuencia, la doctora me bajó la dosis del tratamiento y esta vez debía cumplirlo por 11 días más.
I returned to the office 11 days later for my last check-up. The audiometry was done again and it revealed that my hearing was in the normal range. That means that my hearing was not 100 percent. However, all that ringing and interference that caused me so much discomfort was gone.
Volví a la consulta 11 días después para mi último chequeo. Me volvieron a hacer la audiometría y ésta mostraba que mi audición había quedado en un rango normal. Lo que significa que mi audición no quedó al 100 por ciento. Sin embargo, todos esos zumbidos e interferencias que me causaban tanta molestia habían desaparecido.
The doctor was very happy with the result, as she had a case similar to mine, but she could not help that person because did not go to the medical consultation at the right time. Thank God, I went to a specialist on time.
La doctora estaba muy contenta con el resultado, ya que tuvo un caso similar al mío, pero no pudo ayudar a esa persona debido a que no acudió a la consulta médica en el momento oportuno. Gracias a Dios, acudí al especialista a tiempo.
I listened to the signals my body was sending me and as a result, I was able to heal my hearing loss.
Le hice caso a las señales que el cuerpo me estaba enviando y en consecuencia, pude sanar mi pérdida auditiva.
