I wanted to participate in this contest with a species that, although not considered a domestic animal, nor usually part of our pets, we live with very closely because they've carved out a space for themselves in our urban environment. And if we're talking about beauty, they possess a very peculiar kind that inspires a lot of tenderness in us.
I'm talking about pigeons, those birds we often see walking on our rooftops, and even on the ground pecking at any little bug or grain they find that might serve as food. It's common to find many of them in parks, and of course, on farms, specifically in the poultry area. They mingle among the birds, pecking at the grain they're fed.
In the housing development where I live, they've taken over the unoccupied houses, especially the two-story ones, and have made the upper floor their own, sneaking in through broken windows. Many people chase them off their roofs and walls because they consider them a pest that affects and pollutes the environment with their droppings, which they leave everywhere. I don't question the act of chasing them away; it's their right. However, I don't condone the mistreatment some people inflict on them. Less extreme solutions are needed.
In fact, I currently have a pair of tenants living under my roof for some time now, right on a section of the supporting structure. Their droppings fall right onto one end of a wooden piece of furniture, and for now, what I do is clean both the furniture and my porch daily until I figure out how to move it and rearrange everything else. Rest assured, if they're in my house, it's because they've found peace and security here, and if I block that space from them, they'll find another, more comfortable spot in my home, just to stay.
Pigeons have many connotations in the world, not only in nature but also symbolically… for me, the most significant is seeing them as a symbol of peace. But getting into the natural realm, I'm going to give you some characteristics of this bird, its lifestyle, habitat, and diet.
🕊️ THE DOVE 🕊️
Pigeons, or Columbidae, are birds of the order Columbiformes, comprising a total of 353 species. They are distributed worldwide, except in Antarctica and the Arctic, and have a center of dispersal in Central America.
These birds congregate wherever food is offered, strolling through parks and gardens, perching, or even on top of buildings; pigeons are part of the fauna of many cities.
Description
Pigeons are relatively small birds with compact bodies. Their heads are small, and their legs are short. They have a small, slightly downward-curved beak with two nostrils on its surface, protected by a membranous layer called the operculum. Their wings are large, and their tails are short.
The size, weight, and plumage color vary considerably among species. Wild pigeons can weigh from 238 to 380 grams, but domestic pigeons are usually a bit heavier due to the abundance of food they consume in urban areas.
Plumage color also varies; some are white, others light brown or dull gray, and still others are darker, bluish, or have lighter stripes.
Habitat
Pigeons can be seen in urban parks, around farms, in agricultural fields, on tall urban and rural buildings, on rooftops, walls, balconies, and railway bridges, among other places. Wild pigeons regularly inhabit rocky cliffs.
Diet
They feed on seeds, grains, and fruits. Depending on the species, they may eat grains they find on the ground or feed in trees. Some catch invertebrates, such as insects and spiders, to supplement their diet. Domestic pigeons consume a slightly more varied menu, which may include breadcrumbs and even food scraps. They drink water continuously in small sips and then tilt their heads back to swallow the liquid.
Behavior
They are timid birds that prefer to flee from danger rather than attack. During the day they can be seen everywhere, and at night they usually rest. They spend a lot of time together and feed in flocks. They emit various types of sounds for different purposes, such as attracting a mate or signaling alarm.
They are very intelligent and have a prodigious memory, both visual and olfactory. They can remember the scent of the area where they live and the way back to their nest from very long distances.
There is the case of homing pigeons, which were bred to send small packages or papers with messages attached to one of their legs. They were widely used during World War I.
These birds also exhibit monogamy, a characteristic that allows them to take good care of their young and maintain a strong emotional bond between parents and offspring.
Reproduction
They are oviparous species. Each has a specific breeding season. Wild pigeons build their nests with twigs and debris high on rocky cliffs, while those living in urban areas nest on roofs, beams, or other tall structures.
Once in the nest, the female typically lays 1 to 3 eggs, and both she and the male take turns incubating them. The incubation period is around 18 days.

The Symbolism of the Dove
The dove is a universal symbol of peace, purity, love, and hope. Its meaning has transcended history in various cultures and religions. The most important are listed below:
1.- As a symbol of peace and reconciliation: This connotation comes from the Judeo-Christian tradition and is found in the story of Noah's Ark, where the dove returned to the ark carrying an olive branch in its beak, signifying that the flood had ended and that the earth and God were at peace with humanity.
2.- The Holy Spirit: In Christian theology, the white dove represents the Holy Spirit. This symbolism is based on the biblical passage of the baptism of Jesus, where the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove, thus representing purity, innocence, divine grace, and the love of God.
3.- As a symbol of love and fidelity: These birds are known for mating for life, which has historically made them symbols of love, fidelity, and devotion. In Greco-Roman mythology, doves were associated with goddesses of love and beauty, such as Aphrodite and Venus. In Chinese culture, two doves together represent a symbol of lasting marriage and loyalty.
4.- As a representation of purity and the soul: Because of their white, immaculate plumage and gentle demeanor, doves are linked to innocence and simplicity. In early Christian funerary art, these birds represented the soul of the deceased and their desire to attain peace and eternal life.

Yo quise participar en este concurso con una especie que aunque no está considerada como un animal doméstico, ni habitualmente forma parte de nuestras mascotas, si convivimos con ellas muy de cerca porque se han consagrado un espacio en nuestro entorno urbano. Y si de belleza se trata, ellas poseen una muy peculiar que nos inspira mucha ternura.
Se trata de las palomas, estas aves que vemos a menudo caminando por nuestros tejados, e incluso en el suelo picoteando cuanto bichito o granito encuentran que pueda servir de alimento. Es habitual encontrarnos muchas de ellas en los parques, y por supuesto, en las granjas, exactamente en el área de las aves de corral, ellas se mezclan entre éstas para picotear los granos con los que son alimentadas.
En la urbanización donde habito, se han apoderado de las casas deshabitadas, sobre todo las que son de dos pisos, y han hecho de su propiedad, el piso superior, filtrándose por alguna ventana rota. Muchas personas las ahuyentan de sus techos y paredes, porque las consideran una plaga que afecta el ambiente y lo contamina, debido a su excremento que depositan en todos lados. No cuestiono la acción de ahuyentar, están en su derecho, más no apoyo el maltrato que algunos les propinan. Se buscan soluciones menos extremas.
De hecho, en mi casa ahora mismo tengo una pareja de inquilinas que alberga bajo mi tejado desde hace un tiempo, justo sobre un fragmento del tubular de soporte. Sus cositas caen justo sobre un extremo de un mueble de madera, y por ahora lo que hago es limpiar a diario tanto el mueble como mi porche hasta que busque cómo rodarlo y darle un giro a la posición de lo demás. Tengan por seguro que si están en mi casa, es porque aquí hallaron paz y seguridad, y si bloqueo ese espacio para que no se posen, encontrarán otro más cómodo en mi morada, con tal de seguir aquí.
Las palomas tienen muchas connotaciones en el mundo, no sólo en la naturaleza sino simbólicamente… para mí la más significativa, es verlas como un símbolo de paz. Pero entrando en materia natural, les voy a dar algunas características de esta ave, su estilo de vida, hábitat, y alimentación.

Las palomas o colúmbidas, son aves del orden de las columbiformes que tienen un total de 353 especies. Están distribuidas por todo el mundo, excepto en la Antártida y el Ártico, y tienen un centro de dispersión en América Central.
Estas aves se arremolinan en cualquier lugar donde les ofrecen comida, andan caminando por los parques y jardines, también en posadas, o en lo alto de los edificios; las palomas son parte de la fauna de muchas ciudades.
Descripción
Las palomas son aves relativamente pequeñas y de cuerpo compacto. Su cabeza es reducida y sus patas son cortas. Tienen un pico pequeño y ligeramente curvado hacia abajo, con 2 orificios nasales en su superficie, protegidos por una capa membranosa llamada opérculo. Sus alas son grandes, y su cola es corta.
El tamaño, peso y color del plumaje varían mucho entre las especies. La paloma silvestre puede pesar de 238 a 380 gramos, pero las domésticas suelen ser un poco más pesadas debido a la abundancia de alimento que consumen en las zonas urbanas.

Hábitat

Las palomas salvajes regularmente habitan en acantilados rocosos.
Alimentación
Se alimentan de semillas, granos y frutos. Según la especie, pueden consumir los granos que encuentran en el suelo o comer en los árboles. Algunas atrapan invertebrados, como insectos y arañas, con los que complementa su dieta, las domésticas consumen un menú un poco más variado, que puede incluir migas de pan y hasta desechos de comida. Beben agua continuamente en pequeños sorbos y después inclinan hacia atrás la cabeza para tragar el líquido
Comportamiento
Son aves tímidas, que prefieren huir frente al peligro antes que atacar. Durante el día se les observa por todos lados, y por la noche acostumbran descansar. Pasan mucho tiempo juntas y se alimentan en bandadas. Emiten varios tipos de sonidos con distintos fines, como atraer una pareja o mostrar alarma.
Son muy inteligentes, y tienen una prodigiosa memoria, tanto visual como olfatoria. Pueden recordar el olor de la zona donde viven y el camino para regresar a su nido desde distancias muy largas.
Existe el caso de las palomas mensajeras que fueron criadas para enviar pequeños paquetes o papeles con mensajes sujetos a una de sus patas. Fueron muy utilizadas en tiempos de la I Guerra Mundial.
Estas aves también presentan monogamia, cuya característica les permite cuidar bien sus crías y poseer una relación afectiva importante entre progenitores y descendencia.
Reproducción
Son especies ovíparas. Cada una tiene una temporada de reproducción específica. En el caso de las palomas salvajes, construyen su nido con palitos y desechos en lo alto de un acantilado rocoso, pero las que viven en zonas urbanas, lo hacen en techos, vigas u otras estructuras altas.
Una vez en el nido, la hembra pone regularmente 1 a 3 huevos y tanto ella como el macho se turnan para incubarlos. El período de incubación tiene alrededor de 18 días.

Las palomas en algunas ciudades, se les ha llegado a considerar una plaga. A la gente le preocupa el hecho de que pueden transmitir algunas enfermedades a través de sus excrementos, como la psitacosis, la histoplasmosis y la criptococosis.
Simbología de la paloma
La paloma es un símbolo universal de paz, pureza, amor y esperanza. Su significado ha trascendido históricamente en diversas culturas y religiones. Las más importantes las cito a continuación:
1.- Como símbolo de paz y reconciliación: Esta connotación proviene de la tradición judeocristiana, y reza en la historia del Arca de Noé, que la paloma regresó al arca llevando una rama de olivo en el pico, como significado de que el diluvio había terminado, y la tierra y Dios estaban en paz con la humanidad.
2.- El Espíritu Santo: En la teología cristiana reza que la paloma blanca representa al Espíritu Santo. Este simbolismo está basado en el pasaje bíblico del bautismo de Jesús, donde el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre él en forma de paloma, representando así, la pureza, la inocencia, la gracia divina y el amor de Dios.
3.- Como símbolo de amor y fidelidad: Estas aves son conocidas por aparearse de por vida, lo que las ha convertido históricamente en símbolos de amor, fidelidad y devoción. En la mitología grecorromana, se asociaba a las palomas, con las diosas del amor y la belleza, como Afrodita y Venus. En la cultura china, dos palomas juntas representan un símbolo de matrimonio duradero y lealtad.
4.- Como representación de la pureza y el alma: Por su plumaje blanco e inmaculado, y su comportamiento apacible, se vincula a las palomas con la inocencia y la sencillez. En el arte funerario paleocristiano, estas aves representaban el alma del difunto y su deseo de alcanzar la paz y la vida eterna.
